Ben Frow unhappy with BB15 casting

Quote:

Channel 5′s director of programmes Ben Frow has revealed that he was unhappy with the cast of housemates on Big Brother 2014: Power Trip.

Show viewers were unsure about the casting right from the start of the series, claiming the line-up was too business-minded and more suited to a show like The Apprentice.

Throughout the run many also complained about there being too many arguments and a lack of fun in the house – mainly thanks to the presence of divisive salon owner Helen Wood, who was excluded from all evictions after being handed a pass to the final.

Now C5 boss Frow – the man responsible for hiring Emma Willis as Big Brother’s main presenter – has admitted that this year’s cast could have been better, but did not elaborate on what he thought was wrong with it.

Speaking at the recent Edinburgh International Television Festival, he said: “It was a challenging year, I’m not sure we got the casting right this year in many ways.”

Wood was crowned winner of Big Brother 2014 last month in one of the show’s closest results ever, with just 1.2% of the public vote separating her from runner-up Ashleigh Coyle.

The result was so controversial that it provoked 400 complaints to media regulator Ofcom, with Channel 5 releasing a lengthy statement insisting the outcome was above board.

However, fans questioned the credibility of C5′s account of events after noticing that it contained at least two factual errors, forcing the broadcaster to issue an amendment.

Elsewhere at the Festival, Frow defended the dip in ratings for Big Brother 2014, insisting he doesn’t want the fifteen-year-old show to be the “number one programme”.

I'm glad he can see that BB15 was a mess.

for reals

Cal. 02-09-2014 07:59 PM

bit worrying how more fun being wanted is mentioned though...hmm. We don't want a BB4.

Cal. 02-09-2014 08:00 PM

And basically Tamara, Kimberly and Steven should not have been there.

iRyan 02-09-2014 08:01 PM

I don't think the cast was even the problem, it was all production's fault IMO.

Raph 02-09-2014 08:02 PM

Good he thinks this, but I think the model/history in tv thing was the worst thing about this cast and not necessarily the business mentality of many of them

Yeah true

No use of having a brilliant cast next year if random twists are going to get them all evicted

Jamesy 02-09-2014 08:08 PM

The cast was the ultimate downfall of BB15. The launch appeared like a cheap The Apprentice, the weeks following it were all about bullying and even after that all we got were a vile, disgusting, deluded bunch that kept targeting 3 honest, caring and down-to-Earth housemates. It was like watching a year 8 class in high school, the bullies vs the nice ones.

The only week I enjoyed thoroughly was hurricane Toya week.

Production was a mess (apart from graphics, Emma presenting and the concept of the theme) too, but really the cast and constant twists were the main problems.

Cast and production were awful this year.

Many of the casual BB fans were put off straight away because of the lack of diversity and how they blatant wannabes. It was all over Twitter in both launch nights (mainly the first).

I'm really pleased with this actually, better than burying his head in the sand

Samm 02-09-2014 09:39 PM

Good more diversity next year plz

Less meddling would have made it a better series.

NO free pass and NO "killer" nomination.

I liked it at the start because it seemed most of them were quite clever. But it seems the only person you could have a decent conversation with would have been Matthew. Zoe and Mark to have a laugh with and that's it. The rest were either argumentative, paranoid, boring or only had fun if there was "alcohol".

Beastie 14-09-2014 06:45 PM

I want a laugh. I want fun. I want people in there who need the money.

But you got to throw in 1 or 2 rich posh brats because they usually come over as entertaining.

'he doesn’t want the fifteen-year-old show to be the number one programme'

wtf? is he purposely sabotaging Big Brother then?

More fun won't make a BB4.

BB5 and 6 had huge heaps of fun and comedy. They had their drama and arguments but it wasn't relentless or without a huge heap of fun. That's what makes it different from the misery-fest that was BB15.

daniel-lewis-1985 14-09-2014 08:12 PM

I don't know if I like the fact he doesn't want BB to be Channel 5's number 1 show. It reminds me of Channel 4 wanting to ditch it to go into a more creative direction as they were fed up with just being known for BB and American imports which is what Channel 5 has become.

I like this guy though hes very honest and doesn't drip feed us fans bull**** he actually answers our questions and how many other people will admit faults with their own Channel?

Jordan. 14-09-2014 08:13 PM

The cast was a lot better than BB14's

I think you're in the minority of viewers who think that but a lot of people did get passionate about this years cast.

They were very love them or hate them....Actually I think it was just hate lol. Just thinking back to launch night and Twitter was going insane with the choice of housemates. Tweeters were not impressed.

Jamesy 14-09-2014 08:48 PM

A few of the BB15 cast I liked (aside from obviously Ashleigh, Chris and Christopher).. Biannca, Danielle, Matthew, Toya... All good, entertaining housemates, they just ended up in the wrong series imo.

Helen, Kimberly, Mark, Pauline and Steven ruined the series. The constant manipulation, twists, forgettable tasks and dodgy editing were just as bad. Production and casts stepped up a mark for BB14/CBB13, don't know why it all went downhill in the space of a few months.

BB14 was just right and a great cast on the whole. The tasks, while a bit 'samey' to old ones, were great and memorable, editing was better, the twists weren't every week and generally it felt like a good old 'classic' series.

ruiphillips 15-09-2014 06:43 AM

He better recolonize that turd of a series along with it's winner.

Give us another Queen Gina and watch those ratings rise

Spot on, the production of this series with the endless twists and twists within twists ruined the series.

The meddling with noms and then even the eviction process too made matters worse for me.

Jay. 15-09-2014 10:28 AM

Here for more fun, the focus on drama was boring this year :clap1:

zakman440 15-09-2014 10:42 AM

I think he's got more to be unhappy with than the casting...
