Is anybody else watching this?

I've been looking forward to it since the adverts came on. It's okay so far.

Yeah I'm watching it. I'm enjoying it so far.

I had no idea her actual name is Cilla White. :laugh:

60s females must have been sh*t if she was one of the best sellers. :umm2:

It was an interesting time for british pop music thats for sure. Anyway Im enjoying it .
I shall have to record the next episode as I am busy next week

The Beatles. Poor sods putting up with her.

I think she got quite lucky in life tbh.

And from what I've heard she is very unpleasant person. People that have seen/met her in person never have anything nice to say.

I still liked the show though. I love Sheridan and the blonde-haired guy as actors.

I haven't watched this but read in an interview with her how ruthless she was for fame and held her husband back in his ambitions to keep herself up.

I like some of her songs,probably 'Conversations' is the one I like best but her voice grates on me actually.
I wasn't around in the 60s but love the music from that time, Cilla would likely be one of the Female singers I least like from that era however.

Interesting first programme I have to admit.

I enjoyed tonights show and i'll watch next week , I've never liked Cilla but Sheridan is an excellent actress, always totally believable in the parts i've seen her play . I like her lots

She never was one of the best - just one of the luckiest because she knew Paul Mcartney. Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, Helen Shapiro - the list of better singers goes on. By the way, lovely 'girl next door Cilla' was anything but; she was, and is a big fake - that scouse voice is totally effected, watch early footage of her being interviewed and she talked posh. Then there's the thousands of pounds worth of cosmetic surgery and dentistry. Her whole 'working class girl' façade (which made her rich and famous in the first place)got blown away when she was overheard slagging off working class people while swigging champagne with her Tory party supporting cronies. Oh - and then there's the little matter of a £1 million pound insurance claim for a 'robbery and tie up' at her house which - after an investigation - she never got paid out for. :wavey:

..I watched this Braden, I enjoyed it, it was a good start and hopefully nest week, it'll really get into that whole Liverpool vibe at the time with some great music...I know she wasn't the most talented in terms of worldwide female artists at the time but I don't think there were many female British artists..there was so many male artists and bands and I think it was a time when music in general was 'owned' by young females so I think she did well to have the success that she did...my mum got me into British music of this era and especially Dusty was her favourite...

I didn't mean best in that sense, I suppose I meant "successful" with all of her no 1's and top tens. But, yes, very lucky to be in 60 Liverpool at the time.

I would personally of the Female singers who appeared in the 60s, place Cilla quite low,she was for me, fortunate to get so many good and big songs early on in her career.
Sadly her success in the UK anyway came surprisingly after beating far superior versions of the songs by Dionne Warwick,namely 'Anyone who had a Heart' and 'Alfie'.

The Beatles connection certainly I think helped Cilla Black,without that I think she would have been eclipsed by those 60s female singers such as Sandie Shaw, Lulu,Marianne Faithfull (whose voice I really like myself), Jackie Trent and of course the best Female singer to arrive in the 1960s Dusty Springfield.

However there were the singers too who crossed over to the 60s from the 1940s and 1950s too, namely Shirley Bassey and the brilliant Petula Clark,(Petula still recording, performing and gaining UK and International Chart success now), both of whom would have and I believe did also eclipse Cilla.

She has an interesting story,no doubt.
Last nights episode showed how selfish she was even early on but also s determination to succeed anyway she could,it will be more interesting to see how the story develops and if they really show her more unpleasant side as much.

To be fair to her too, she did a rather good version of the Righteous Brothers,'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' which she managed to take to number 2 in the charts behind their number one version.

Well written. I am ashamed that i left out some of the other girl singers. I too loved Marianne Faithfull's voice (and her looks). I think her version of 'As Tears Go By' is one of the saddest most poignant tracks I've heard. :wavey:

I love that song by Marianne Faithfull, she had a really good way of singing that prompted you to listen in my view.
I am only 22 but I love 60s music and for me her work, from all I have heard, is near faultless.

I bought a bit of a dog-eared paperback copy of Cilla's biography at a charity shop, as I love biographies. Read it, so might give it to a charity shop to resell it now. However so far the first episode of Cilla seems to have only stayed true to some of her life if her biography is to be believed? Bits I remember from the book, other bits I don't recall, especially Bobby appearing more as a bit of an idiot rather than savvy.

I love Marianne Faithful - Her Broken English album is in my top ten

That was her later work wasn't it,late 70s,early 80s when she then had the more 'earthy' vocal sound to her voice on a range of albums.

Lucy Jordan is one of my favourite songs of her and that was a great album overall too.
When I first got it a year or 2 ago, I thought it wasn't her but then got used to that new sound.

This is another thing with me as to Cilla,for me she seems to have been one of the female singers who actually didn't progress from where she started.
In fact her songs and recordings seemed to get worse. She was fortunate in my view to get into presenting rather than still singing.

I recall a distinctive voice and a few great songs . Alfie , Anyone who had a Heart , Step inside Love , You're My World ...Something Tells me ...
I thought the episode had a few weak scenes tbh and I spent an hour waiting for a few of her known songs ...maybe next week

I agree, her voice has more warmth and is far more appealing,to me anyway.

Anyone Who Had A Heart for me was done to total perfection by Dionne Warwick however.
It must have been really frustrating for her to see Cilla Black get the big hit in the UK with it.

No doubt Cilla made a good version but for me Dionne Warwick was total class with it.

I have to admit to enjoying this series far more than I thought I would.
