X Factor receives Ofcom complaints, partly due to Fishy Lola

The X Factor has attracted over 100 complaints for its latest live show due to the Halloween themed performances.

Some viewers were quick to pick up the phone or get writing in to complain about one performance in particular.

Lola Saunders’ take on Gnarls Barkley’s hit crazy has been branded “irresponsible” due to its portrayal of those with mental illnesses.

Lola’s mentor Cheryl didn’t help matters when she explained the performance, saying: “It was crazy, we had a theme. If you didn’t notice there were people in straitjackets.”

Some 69 people have since complained to ITV while 61 have made an official complaint with TV watchdog Ofcom.

Which, for stats fans, represents about 0.001% of the viewers of Saturday night’s show.

Kate Nightingale, of Mind and Rethink Mental Illness’s Time to Change anti-stigma campaign, complained to the Daily Mirror newspaper: “What is truly scary is that a show as high profile as the X Factor is sending the message that people with mental health problems are to be feared.

“It’s disappointing that in 2014, we can’t enjoy a bit of Halloween fun without it coming at the expense of people with mental health problems.”

A spokesperson for ITV responded: “Lola’s performance was in no way intended to cause any offence or to ridicule the very serious issue of mental health. The creative for the performance was a fantasy interpretation of the song’s lyrics.”

A spokesperson for Ofcom stated: “We will assess these complaints before making a decision whether to investigate.”

Life just wouldn't be the same without those eager to phone Ofcom.

Indeed. :joker:

There's always somebody ringing Ofcom for the most minor things. They must surely laugh at some of the things people ring in for.

I see their reasons, Mental health is no laughing matter. Y'all were shocked and appaled at Asda and Tesco when they brought out their mental patient halloween costumes, but when it's your favourite show you all soften up.

I didn't even see those costumes, personally.

Didn't even cross my mind watching it and i never even realised it about that Crazy song i always just thought it was a chunnneee

Never mind the costumes, I'm surprised people didn't complain about having to listen to the bitch warble her way through a tune!

Seriously people need to get a grip, if people are gonna complain about something complain at the fact that Jay James is gonna butcher another classic song this week while an act with potential like Jack was eliminated with no sing off opportunity to save him.

I thought people would complain when I heard straight jacket comment. I did wonder if she should be saying that
