What's your views on open relationships?

Somehow, don't ask my why or how, I have got myself involved with two different guys who are both in open relationships. It's nothing too sordid as both of them appear to be more concentrated on their relationships but my question is what exactly defines the strength of a relationship to the point where you could sleep with other people?
I know I certainly couldn't do it, but is a relationship 100% happy if the participants want to sleep elsewhere?

I personally couldn't be in one because I can't even imagine how I'd be fine with my boyfriend sleeping with other guys.. But I've also experience guys who have been in open relationships and if it works for them, then heyho alls good in my eyes

But saying that, I don't view 'open' relationships as relationships really, if you love someone and want to be with them, then you wouldn't want to sleep with other people.. I find them to be cop outs really.

It's nonsense. People that do it aren't satisfied with their partner so if that's the case break up. If you want to experience a threesome once or twice fine but continuously allowing people to sleep with your partner is just not a relationship.

I could never be in one. I like the thought of somebody loving just me and him thinking I'm the best thing to happen to him tbh.. I don't understand the purpose or the concept. Might as well be single and just screw around.

If both parties are agreed and happy then to each their own.

But I agree, I don't personally view it as "real". It makes it more of a casual thing.

I've been with men who were in that situation. From what I've seen it's mainly older couples who've been together for years and agree to play with others. I understand if they want to try something new now and then but just as long as you're completely honest with your partner. Good for them, fulfill your pleasures more.

Personally I'm not strong enough to do something like that with my partner.

Never, I couldn't share anyone I'm the jealous and possessive bunny boiler type.

Natalie. 12-11-2014 06:08 AM

I couldn't do it, don't like the thought of them being with someone else. I don't understand it, when you can be single and sleep around but as long as they're both happy about it

GypsyGoth 12-11-2014 07:02 AM

It doesn't sound like a relationship to me, and I wouldn't get involved with someone who wanted something like that.

However just because it's not for me, well if other people find happiness that way, good for them.

True long lasting relationships are built on mutual trust and commitment imho, to keep a relationship strong you have to be willing to give it your all which doesn't exist in open relationships at all, I see them as a pretty obvious excuse to 'have your cake and eat it' and I honestly think it's something that's always going to end with tears from at least one of the 'couple' since we are all inclined to be a little jealous.

Brilliant put Josy.

Fantasies can 'spice up' certain relationships, but I believe that in most cases if one or both partners try to make them a reality, they are heading for very real trouble and heartbreak.

If you were my partner, I wouldn't dare even mention the subject. :hehe:

Personally I think it says more about the "strength" of your relationship to not sleep with other people  Anyway, I guess each to the their own but I know it definitely wouldn't be for me, I f I wanted to sleep around I'd just have stayed single and I certainly don't share

I know lol but isn't that a thing there as well, dating people until you commit to one person?

joeysteele 12-11-2014 10:00 AM

Maybe I think too much, however I feel if open relationships are acceptable to people then there is nothing wrong with them.
I think if 2 people choose to get married or have some sort of legal staus as to living together then that is likely to cause problems.

Then again, this is just me I am talking about not anyone else here,I find it hard to accept that only one person could love/fancy me through all my life or vice versa that I could only love/fancy only one person too.
My Mum always pulls me on that thinking.

Maybe I will mellow as years go on but I have no wish for a relationship of any kind at present so that is in the main, where I could say 'perhaps',even for a time, open reationships for some could work.

Thinking about it the only way I would have been able to have a few girls on the go would have been to lie about my intentions in the relationship and I don't believe that is right I would never do that. I'm not sure many girls round here are into open relationships or if they were other lads obviously got in there well before I ever could.

Maybe I'm speaking from a personal perspective I've only ever known a girl as my girlfriend or a friend or nothing at all. I've never dated so I don't know what it's like.
