Speaking today at the Salford Media Festival, ITV’s Director of Television Peter Fincham will confirm Coronation Street is to broadcast a live episode in 2015 from its new production base in Trafford, Manchester.

The special episode will be filmed at Coronation Street's new state-of-the-art production base on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal overlooking MediaCity in Salford, and will mark ITV’s 60 years on air.

Cast, crew and writers have received the news this morning (19 November) ahead of the announcement. The live episode will broadcast in September 2015 and will ensure viewers are tantalised by storylines reaching a dramatic climax.

"We’re delighted to be marking ITV’s 60th anniversary with a live episode from Coronation Street’s brilliant new studios and set," said Executive Producer Kieran Roberts.

"We’re immensely proud of our new home and it’s been the most amazing first year of production.

"The cast, writers, and production team are exhilarated by the prospect of a live broadcast as the programme’s 50th anniversary episode was received so brilliantly by the audience,” he added.

Coronation Street Producer Stuart Blackburn, who produced Emmerdale’s live special to celebrate the drama’s 40th anniversary in 2012, will mastermind Coronation Street’s live episode whilst continuing to oversee the soap.

His production team will pre-record episodes across the summer of 2015 which will dovetail into the live episode in September.

“It’s an honour to be at the helm as Coronation Street goes live once more,” said Stuart.

“We’ve a reputation to uphold after the success of the tram crash and I’m going to enjoy working with the storyliners and writers as we plot stories for our live episode in 2015.

We’ll be doing all we can to eclipse what’s gone before,” said Stuart.

Predictable - to compete with EE because they're going live next year too. It's what they did back in 2010.

I'm just saying that they've done it twice - announced a live episode the same year EE is doing one.

The last time they did a live ep was for the 50th anniversary of Corrie though, which is a bigger anniversary than 25 years, lol, and they did that because they also did a live episode for the 40th anniversary. Emmerdale also did a live episode for it's anniversary too, it's just become a thing soaps do.

idgi, it was their 50th anniversary in 2010 so wouldn't it just be their 55th?

Was the tram crash not the last time they did a live ep?

As much as people are complaining about the state of Corrie at the minute (I lost interest months ago), the cast are more than capable of pulling another fantastic live episode off. The 50th was incredible.

So this is fast approaching, wonder what the storyline will be?

Drew. 10-08-2015 06:12 PM

Looking forwards to this

Emmerdale should have been live tbh, Corrie is rubbish so may as well put the better ITV soap live.

Jake. 10-08-2015 06:17 PM

Should be decent

Drew. 10-08-2015 06:17 PM

Corrie isn't rubbish.. its well written with depth into the storylines along with some realism to every day life. Emmerdale atm is only attracting a certain type of audience with its rushed storylines that involve constant drama, violence and affairs.. theres no depth or build up to what they do.

Rob! 10-08-2015 06:46 PM

They've said that the live episode will mainly revolve around David vs Callum so my guess would be that David accidentally kills him or something.

Scarlett. 10-08-2015 11:20 PM

Corrie is a lot stronger at the moment, they stopped relying on stunts a few years ago, sure they have a fire here and there, but they're spaced apart enough. The helicopter crash in Emmerdale was a little.. silly.

Where's the Platt's garage gone? lol
