Muhammad has become the most popular name for newborn boys in the UK, according to website BabyCentre.

While Arabic baby names are on the rise, TV shows such as Game Of Thrones have also inspired names for the next generation.

The website’s list of the top 100 baby names of 2014 showed Muhammad has risen a huge 27 places from last year to claim the number one spot for the boys.

The data showed an enormous surge in Arabic names generally, with Nur a new entry in the girls’ top 100, jumping straight to number 29, and Maryam rising 59 places to number 35 in the list.

Omar, Ali, and Ibrahim are all new to the boys’ top 100.

Top 10 girls’ names

1 Sophia
2 Emily
3 Lily
4 Olivia
5 Amelia
6 Isla
7 Isabella
8 Ava
9 Sophie
10 Chloe

Sophia was the top name for baby girls, mirroring its popularity in BabyCentre’s charts in the US, Brazil, Spain and Russia last year.

Sarah Redshaw, managing editor for BabyCentre, said: ‘With the increase of Arabic names plus Aarav, an Indian boys’ name, the top 100 shows the ever-increasing diversity of the UK today.

‘Parents have also been influenced by celebrity name choices. The Beckhams and Simon Cowell have been big influences this year. Eric, the name Simon Cowell chose for his son, increased by 314 per cent.’

Breaking Bad also continued to influence, as Skyler, Jesse and Walter all increased in popularity.

Top 10 boys’ names

1 Muhammad
2 Oliver
3 Jack
4 Noah
5 Jacob

Isn't like 90% of Muslim men called Muhammad? Shake it up a bit.

Creggle 05-12-2014 03:03 PM

Oliver, Ethan, Noah, Jacob, Joshua, who the hell calls their kids these names? I swear I've met like, maybe 1 or 2 'olivers' or 'noahs' in my life. List sounds like b/s

Also, more Sophias running around than Sophies? Rebecca not even top 10? B/s upon b/s right hurr. Jack, James, Muhammed, Sophie and Chloe are the only ones that make any sense.

You'd be surprised, you won't probably notice these names around for a few years till the babies start getting older. There are alot of french sounding girls names getting extremely popular here, Annabelle, Isabelle, Millie, Amelia etc I've come across quite a few lately

Better than Muhammed I guess, each to their own. I know it's a list of 2014 but I didn't really think about it, as obviously most of the babys being born these days are coming from babies themselves, so hence the strange names

Can't wait to meet the new generation of wine brands, pop stars and chocolates :cheer2:

This is weird, I'm used to being the current generation but us 20+ aren't anymore, are we? Now we get to take the front seat and watch a new generation. :worry:

I don't understand why people would be bothered by these rankings, or the fact that Sophia & Muhammad are the most popular names.

Do they actually influence or hold any importance to people?

Shaun 05-12-2014 06:42 PM

can you imagine if they named the new one Muhammad (assuming it's a boy like every bloody royal birth seems to be)

Crimson Dynamo 05-12-2014 06:42 PM

It superstition that makes these muslims chose that vile name. Its like the UK 100 years ago with Mary, Paul, Joseph etc

I am here for Kosmo, Bitch and Mofo
