The New trend with Big Brother

I've been thinking lately about the "types" of favourites/winners over the years and it seems to me that Big Brother has gone into phase 3 of the type of people the public want to win. At the very beginning it was the nicest Housemate who went on to win the series, that continued up to BB8 (not counting Nadia or Petes wins, i think they won because their story was different and they had a lot of sympathy votes) Brian belo winning started the craze of nice but dim people winning and now we seem to be at phase 3 with nasty HMs "redemption stories" (which are so fake imo) with the like of katie Hopkins being favourite and Helen winning last year.

Thoughts?

My only thoughts are to agree with basically everything you said.

I think I preferred it more when the 'nicer' people won it tbh, it's alright supporting entertaining housemates through because they are giving you something to watch every night but to crown them a winner even if they are nasty bastards just doesn't sit right with me.

That said I tend to not really care who wins these days

It may reflect the rise of facebook/twitter. Strong characters become popular as they can be talked about more.

The betting on the show became more intricate. It works out that you win more money by picking an outsider like Helen, and then phoning in a lot of the time to save her. So long as enough people join together in this technique the worst housemates will keep winning. At the beginning nobody figured out the best way to make money from the show.

I agree with all of this.

As Josy said, I understand appreciating entertainment value in certain housemates, but I ultimately like "nice" to win. I don't like people being rewarded for nastiness.

It's not as big a deal with CBB because the winner doesn't get a prize for winning, but Helen winning and receiving the prize money after being a toxic piece of work for 10 weeks really riled me.

Maybe. Do you reckon the fact that Big Brother is less popular now has anything to do with it? As in the if the same amount of people watched and voted, the nice people might still win it but maybe those people just aren't watching anymore?

Yeah and it's funny how everyone hated her and was dying for someone to take her on but the minute they did people started taking Helens side

Interesting point, on the whole think you are right.

If voting behaviour is linked to how the nation is feeling, you could say phase one is the optimism of the New Century with (New Labour). Phase two was a more Environmentally aware (Green) and phase three is more feeling let down by the status quo (UKIP).

I'm struggling a bit with phase 2.

I don't think Aaron was nasty though and also, I think he won because of the FB voting ...............which they promptly cancelled

or you could compare it with the stages of life -
Phase 1 the optimism and positivity of a child
Phase 2 the sometimes silliness of a teenager
Phase 3 the grumpiness of an adult as reality sets in

Hats off, I think you got it spot on then, what is the next phase, maybe old age, nostalgia and a return to nicer times.

Or perhaps Death

Death is looking likely but fingers crossed for nostalgia anyway

This could be very true...
That was the only series I found away to hack the system and vote for Aaron...from Canada

Then they cancelled it and I haven't voted since

wendywillow 20-01-2015 02:06 PM

I don't know about phase 3, Helens win was a fluke, she would've been long gone if not for.....you know.

Daniel. 20-01-2015 02:08 PM

Jim Davidson and Helen winning in the same year was nothing more than rewarding nastiness imo

I would still rather someone like Helen win than Christopher win tho

LukeB 20-01-2015 02:12 PM

I saw this on tumblr the other day

Rachel.
Helen :yuk:

I was so happy when Rachel won. I must have been vocal about my support of her because I remember my friend texting me saying "Your favourite won then!". :laugh2:

BB15's finale left me with very different emotions.

same here, i voted loads for Aaron but wasn't able to vote since they cancelled it

Agree with a lot in here. I preferred it when the nice people won. We kind of seem to bounce between sympathy votes and horrible people at the moment.

The winners usually never bothers me. Helen (BB15) winning is the only time I've felt it was the wrong winner and not deserved in any way.

Ironic though how for years people have moaned about the nice/boring ones winning and the minute we get to having the controversial one winning 90% of people moan.

I guess getting nice and really entertaining is a big ask  Brian Dowling :worship:

LukeB 20-01-2015 02:21 PM

I think the most entertaining winner we had was Pete imo
and the nicest winner was Rachel

bots 20-01-2015 02:21 PM

i think the change is due to a couple of factors. The BB highlights show is driven by drama. If there is none, then these days its artificially created by the production team.

Because the highlights show is driven by drama, and there is next to no live feed, housemates are judged on their reactions to events, good or bad. Instant judgements are formed with housemates unable to change anything unless they create some more drama with them in it that shows them in positive light. It all gets very contrived I think

The rise in popularity of facebook and twitter campaigns then focussing on these "mini bites" exaggerates everything to another level again, so a "normal" person has next to no chance of winning now.

CBB is slightly different because of housemates existing fan bases. Cheggers for instance will do extremely well whether he says boo to a goose or not.

Jack The Cat 20-01-2015 02:24 PM

I say get back to basics

Bring back the Chickens.

Oh how I miss BB1.
