Why does it always have to be... (the first black, the first woman, the first gay)
...the first of everything?
Like why did everyone make a big deal about Obama being the first black president? Thatcher the first woman Prime Minister? Gender and Race are the two most common in the 'firsts' Why? Why is it so important that there is a black president and hes the first? Why is it so important that a woman is in the running to be something? We are all human and being the 'first' of something just makes us segregate ourselves even more. We should judge for who we are as a person, not what gender we are or what colour we are. Stupidity. |

Because a first black President in a country which has grown out of severe racism is a massive thing, just like there being a first female prime minster after women faced hundreds of years of being looked down upon as lesser people because of their gender is a massive thing.
That's probably why they're celebrated as great things, because they are. |
Because in most cases, it's a landmark. We've had centuries of white male prime ministers and presidents. If that cycle had kept repeating, people who weren't white males would have thought they'd never get the chance to achieve something like that. I guarantee that a lot of black aspiring politicians have got into politics due to Barack Obama (the same thing can't really be said about aspiring women politicians and Thatcher...)

I guess i just see it as another person getting elected, rather than the first black person. |
Because they are firsts, like when the first 'male' 1st evictee in BB happens, people will make a fuss about that
|
Because we are trying to get to a point in society where the first turns into the 50th and therefore a non-issue
|
Because other gender/races/sexualitys have been oppressed for decades, it's important to point out landmarks in the reach for full equality

It shows how far we've come as a society. Fifty years ago Obama would have had to sit in a different part of the bus to white people and use a different entrance to a building. Sammy Davis Jr was headlining in Las Vegas and had to use the kitchen entrance because black people weren't allowed in the front door... now they have a black president. Same with gay people, fifty years ago you could go to prison just for being homosexual.

With all due respect, it's a bit of a daft question.
The answer is pretty obvious. |

Because the first Black President means so much when in his lifetime Blacks in America were going in separate doors. Conzors Love do not get in a tangle over these terms |
