The ruling stated: ‘The committee believed the word “pikey” had evolved into common parlance among a number of people to mean “chavvy” or “cheap” and … viewers would not necessarily associate it with the Gipsy and Traveller communities.’

Due to the stereotypical use of the word...

Crimson Dynamo 17-03-2015 12:21 PM

well if pikeys weren't so chavvy surely this would not have happened?

Kizzy 17-03-2015 12:33 PM

define 'chavvy'

Everyone's so very offended. Makes me wonder how some people get through the day, the delicate little flowers.

Kizzy 17-03-2015 12:43 PM

Chavvy
Refers to a mate of the 'pikey' or 'Traveller' family ,i.e 'Oight chavvy!, pass da reefer bouy!'

So, equally as offensive then, and associated with travellers?

pffff! BBC shmee bee cee

Vicky. 17-03-2015 01:00 PM

Some people seem to look for reasons to be offended tbh, its getting slightly pathetic.

Kizzy 17-03-2015 01:22 PM

Then what's the point banning any derogatory word that is used to cause offence to any minority group, sexual preference or faith?
If when they are used it's 'PC gone mad' to object to it...

If the offensive term was directed towards a group I was connected with then I would feel very strongly about it, when you're not directly affected it's easy to be blasé I suppose.

Nedusa 17-03-2015 01:51 PM

How is "pikey" a racist word it does not refer to any particular race, but accurately describes a nasty, dirty, smelly, uncouth, unlawful, unwashed, unedu cated, thieving class of people.

The sort of people who have no moral compass, no scruples, take no responsibility for their lives or their childrens lives, who live of the state and take whatever else they want.

How is that racist................??

Kizzy 17-03-2015 01:55 PM

It's still offensive.

Crimson Dynamo 17-03-2015 01:57 PM

the real crime was that one call from some herbert meant they had to have an enquiry instead of the person who called being told to naff off and watch call the midwife instead

Nedusa 17-03-2015 01:59 PM

Absolutely (see my post above) , would not want to be called one of those.

But it is still not racist and therefore not coved in our race hate legislation.

And you're fully entitled to have it.

Kizzy 17-03-2015 02:21 PM

Thanks.

JoshBB 17-03-2015 02:26 PM

he associated the word with travellers so surely in context that would be racist?

What race are travellers?

they are mostly irish are they not?

Livia 17-03-2015 02:29 PM

Irish travellers tend to devastate an area and leave a trail of filth and rubbish behind them, are above the law, don't pay tax, give a really bad name to real gypsies who are clean and law abiding... and yet they expect preferential treatment. And on top of all that, you have to be really polite when you refer to them or they may get offended.

Kizzy 17-03-2015 02:30 PM

On St Patricks day too..... oof.
