The design on the tails side of the new coin is the work of West Midlands teenager David Pearce, who won a competition to to create the image.

The new coin, which will be introduced in 2017, is the same shape as the old threepenny bit, which was withdrawn in 1971.

The chancellor announced plans at his budget a year ago to replace the current £1 coin because it has become increasingly vulnerable to counterfeiting. Around one in thirty £1 coins are forgeries.

I remember saving my sisters life years ago by dragging her choking body downstairs so our parents could retrieve the threepenny bit she had stuck in her throat.

It will be weird not having the normal round pound.

Plus how long will it take for the old coins to disappear ?

I'd say that more than 1 in 30 is currently fake... Maybe this is just a bad area! More like 1 in 10 :joker:.

To be fair I've yet to see a fake £2 coin (which used the same method with two different metals) and I've also never seen a convincing fake banknote. £1 are notoriously easy to fake, thousands of the little buggers floating around!

We had fakes going round here that even passed the pen test :o Very convincing

I've seen a few that had decent holograms and passed the pen, but usually they just don't quite feel right, if you handle a lot of cash. Like spider-senses tingling.

I've had a few hilarious ones too though. A fiver that was about 2cm too small and had been cut out unevenly was the best. Most recent was a fake 20 where someone had glued on a piece of tin foil in place of the hologram, and drawn on the metal strip with a silver pen :joker:. Points for effort!

Oh and a tenner printed on tissue paper. That was a good one.

With this and the new plastic £5/£10 notes coming it's quite exciting to see so many changes happening with cash.

I read a report about this a while back (they confirmed the new coin last year). If anyone's interested, what will happen later this year is businesses and other industries will be sent samples of the new coin, so they can upgrade or change anything that uses £1 coins. The govt gives around 18 months for that, so industries can plan any changes and implement them. In early 2017 the new £1 starts to get rolled out, the govt estimate this will be a 6 month process, which involves the new £1 coins being sent out while the old £1 coins are removed from circulation (at cash processing centres), after this process the old coin could be demonetised between 1-3 months.

More than a billion brand new £1 coins are due to be released on 28 March. The 12-sided coin, described by the Royal Mint as “the most secure coin in the world”, will replace the traditional circular £1.

With just under five weeks to go, the Treasury and money experts have urged the British public to spend or exchange their round pounds before they cease being legal tender. However, before rushing to the bank, money specialist website Change Checker is advising customers to check their £1 coins carefully.

They could be sitting on a small fortune.

That’s because as the round £1 coin disappears from our change forever, collectors are desperate to complete a collection of all 24 designs.

In its “Scarcity Index”, Change Checker has identified 24 of the rarest £1 coins to have ever circulated the UK.

Some are worth as much as £50 each.

The 2011 Cardiff City £1 coin – second on the scarcity index – is already selling for £20 on eBay with Change Checker predicting its value will climb.

The £1 coin was introduced in 1983, with a total of 2.2 billion having been struck for circulation since, according to Change Checker.

The last available figures, published by the Royal Mint in 2014, suggested that 1.55 billion £1 coins are in circulation.

Last year, a 2p coin sold for almost £1,400 at auction because it was silver instead of the more conventional copper.

Meanwhile, the Bank of England’s first ever polymer notes were selling for up to £800 on eBay or more than 160 times its face value.

I sat and went through 16 bags (320 coins!) of the little ****ers and didn't find any rare ones :fist:. Now I just give them a glance when I get them :joker:.

A few years ago a guy I was working with got a weird looking £2 coin in his till. He was getting all excited because he was googling it and some sites were saying it could be worth up to £260... but his bubble was well and truly burst when we checked eBay and there were hundreds of them, only going for about £8 each including postage :joker:. Still, £8 for a £2 coin... not a bad deal...

......wish i had a pile of the estimated 45 million fake ones

......anyone found a 20p with date missing.........those were selling for hundreds..FFS?
