Is Social Media making people less sociable?

Is social media making people less sociable? (in real life I mean)

Theres a massive decrease in social interaction these days IMO

Especially with mobile phones and facebook.

Just for an example, we were out for dinner and 3 members of our group sat all night with their mobiles out, snapping shots of everyone, taking selfies, photos of their dinners, their drinks etc, then showing others how many likes the images had got on fb, now is it just me that thinks that's not only extremely rude to the people you are with but a bit sad?

That's just one example theres so much more.

What do you think?

Mmm yes and no. It can help with sociability by opening you up to more interaction with more people, keeping up with people you'd otherwise lose touch with, used to arrange events etc. Though yeah on the other hand it is annoying when people are glued to their phones and keep checking them when they're with other people. Was with a few mates at the football a couple of weeks ago and one of them spent most of the match talking to some bloody bird on tinder. I don't think that's actually a problem with social media itself though just people being a bit rude. You can still have Facebook and all the other stuff without it coming at the expense of being sociable with the people you're with.

I think so yeah, I hate when you're out and people go on their phones, I find it really rude actually. I'd usually say something about it as well. Definitely my daughter who's almost 15 goes out alot less then I did when I was her age, alot of her interactions with her friends is done through face time or snap chat, even when her friends come over, they'll be in her room and all of them will be on their phones/tablets.

That is very rude and narcissistic.

It has, I have a quick chat on facebook PM now instead of arranging to meet friends and rellies :(

Smithy 19-03-2015 11:50 AM

I don't really have a problem if people wanna take pictures but it's rude AF when you're sat around having a chat and there's just one person always completely engrossed in their phone

Nope, if anything it's been a life saver to me. I wouldn't speak to half of my family members and friends who live in different countries to me without it.

That's completely different though, I have said myself many times on here that facebook is handy for keeping in touch with long distance friends and relatives but in reality you wouldn't be out socialising with them anyway if they live in a different country.

Maybe so, but if it weren't for social media, I would socialise with them in person, when I got to whatever country.

I just hate this whole 'Social Media is destroying everything!!!' argument. If it bothers you that much, then don't use it.

(That's not aimed at you, btw. Just social media haters)

I like media

I just hate being social

You don't have to use it for it to bother you, for example, if you're out for dinner and the people you're with are constantly on their phones. Or for you to have an opinion on how younger people interact with eachother nowadays

Does looking at your phone at the up to date radar images of precipitation count as rude?

Yes Josy
a man did a Top Docu on it. (last year - Worldwide)
Showing the damage it does
he filmed the errors we all make because of it

andybigbro 19-03-2015 05:53 PM

Yes and no. I probably don't see many people nowadays because I know what they are up to because of facebook.

However, facebook allows me to create events which I invite people too, and allows us to organise things better for actually meeting up for nights out etc.
