Attempt to oust the speaker

'A government bid to change the rules on electing Commons speakers - seen by Labour as an attempt to oust John Bercow - has been defeated.
Mr Bercow was almost overcome by emotion as he announced the result of the vote - 228 to 202.
He had earlier told MPs: "I'm not going anywhere."
William Hague wanted a secret ballot to decide the Speaker's future after the election but Labour and some Tory MPs said it was a "grubby" plot.
They accused the Commons leader of springing the motion on MPs in the final hours of the current Parliament, before it breaks up for the general election.
'Right thing'
In extraordinary scenes, MPs hurled abuse at Mr Hague for allegedly conspiring with Prime Minister David Cameron to oust Mr Bercow, who is unpopular with much of the Tory leadership.'

An undemocratic, spiteful, devisive and malicious act was stopped, thank goodness GET THEM OUT!!

It's funny though in the vid John Bercow looks like he wants to kick the shiz out of someone so badly

I'm a bit surprised that he's still the speaker after his wife went on CBB...

Livia 26-03-2015 02:30 PM

Bercow is an arse who is deeply unpopular so I'm really not surprised.

Kizzy 26-03-2015 02:38 PM

It seems he is more popular than unpopular in terms of voting percentage. If they could rid themselves of people thought of as an arse on a whim then the commons would most likely be empty.

Is he the guy who spent over £10,000 of taxpayers money on new carpets for his rent free Westminster residence ?

Yes, he's the one.

Livia 26-03-2015 02:43 PM

He's the one who told David Cameron "I'm not happy". And Cameron answered, "Well, which one are you then?"

I'm glad it was defeated, it was a dishonest motion brought in underhand and it's a sorry way for Hague to have ended his career in Parliament

Kizzy 26-03-2015 02:53 PM

If we want to talk expenses we can, but it has no baring on this issue so I won't.

Kizzy 26-03-2015 03:21 PM

Kizzy 26-03-2015 03:44 PM

I actually do too, I'm just annoyed it was him that said it... :)

JoshBB 26-03-2015 04:25 PM

Very cruel. I think Bercow is a great speaker, he's remained very impartial and has been great. The tories really are nasty

Kizzy 26-03-2015 04:30 PM

An MP has claimed he has been "played like a fool" by government ministers over a bid to change the way the Speaker is elected to the House of Commons after the general election.
Charles Walker, who chairs the Procedure Committee appeared tearful as he recounted meetings with senior ministers this week, who did not share their plans with him.
He was clapped by Labour MPs as he said: "I would much rather be an honourable fool... than a clever man."

The tories just don't like getting told! Look which direction he is facing each and every time the commons resembles football terraces...

No
its a plan
but did not work.

He is Still there

Not Nasty

Fools

I think Bercow does a pretty good job, very fitting that the nastier elements in parliament even tried this move.

Justice was well and truly done today and many Conservative backbenchers are even saying that too calling the attempted action 'grubby'.

It was a very dirty plot, and it included witholding information from the chair of the procedures committee.

Only a fool would do this and not expect a backlash, it seems there are still some principled MPs in the commons thankfully.
