The Pakistani flag was raised outside Rochdale Town Hall

This happened last week. How do you feel about it?

Rochdale Council, infamous for snubbing St Georges Day in 2010.

The Pakistani flag was raised outside Rochdale Town Hall yesterday, Pakistan Day, 23 March.

The Mayor of Rochdale Carol Wardle, Mayoress Beverley Place, Simon Danczuk MP, councillors, representatives of organisations, leaders and members of the Pakistani Community attended.

Whilst the flag has been raised outside the Town Hall for many years on Pakistan Day, the event proved controversial and created a storm of protest on social media.

The Sun columnist and Celebrity Big Brother runner up, Katie Hopkins became embroiled in a vitriolic row with Rochdale MP, Simon Danczuk.

Ms Hopkins said the raising of the flag is "not helping community cohesion", it is she added "inflammatory" - in light of the grooming cases that have come to light in Rochdale.

Mr Danczuk said to "equate every Pakistani with grooming is a racist slur". He added that he is proud of Rochdale's "community cohesion".

In an embarrassing mistake, the flag was initially raised upside down.

@KTHopkins:Are these your friends too @SimonDanczuk? Is this why you are raising the Pakistani flag in Rochdale? 77 years inside

No problems with that for me

smudgie 30-03-2015 08:52 AM

So, Katie Hopkins lives in Rochdale does she.
The people of Rochdale will decide if it is inflammatory or not, not some bitter twisted hag like her.
I don't see a problem, especially if they have done it for years, however, there should be no problem with flying the English flag on St.George's day either.

No sorry that is inflammatory.........a bit like marching through a Catholic area of Belfast on the 12th July singing songs about how the Pope can go Fcuk himself.

This isn't much better, first take a town like Rochdale that has been in existance for hundreds of years and had a fairly normal cultural and religious identity, then flood the town over a long period of time with immigrants from the sub-continent.

Then when the immigrant numbers become so vast that the identity of the town is now irrevocably changed, start raising strange flags from other countries above the Town Hall.

People from Rochdale who have lived there with their families for generations must look at this and wonder how their home town was taken away from them like this.

The bitterness and resentment that must be seething through their veins coupled with the fact they are not allowed to utter one word of protest lest they be forever painted as racist, must be overwhelming.

Is it any wonder that UKIP are on the rise, finally a platform to stand up and say ENOUGH of this madness....

The Pakistan flag was raised for about half an hour to mark National Pakistan Day as has happened in the town for years, it's just pathetic for anyone to take strong issue with that or to link it to the child abuse scandal which is not a related incident. Of course that was awful and it should not be brushed under the carpet, there may well be a need to seriously look at attitudes within communities and law enforcement that enabled it to happen for so long. But it does not necessarily follow from that that suddenly any expression of Pakistani identity or celebration of diversity becomes inherently inflammatory and offensive

What actually is nation Pakistan day anyway and why does it need to be marked?

I would wager St George's day does not get marked in Pakistan

Apparently it's the day that Pakistan obtained independence as an Islamic republic. I'm sure it doesn't need to be marked but I don't see the harm in doing so as an acknowledgement of the Pakistani community in Rochdale who might be observing such a day. And no I'm sure it doesn't, maybe if there was a sizeable English population in a major Pakistani town it might do. Or it might not, but I don't really see why that should prevent Rochdale from doing this if they wish.

I don't know.I think with all the current tensions between the Pakistani and English communities i can't see this helping or doing any good.It seems kind of provocative like a red rag to a bull.Maybe not the best idea as it may just cause resentment.

Vicky. 30-03-2015 02:12 PM

Stupid kicking off over a flag IMO. That goes for any flag
