South Carolina policeman charged with murder

after video of shooting emerges.

You can watch the video of the incident if you click the link at the bottom

(CNN)A South Carolina officer has been charged with murder after a video surfaced that appears to show him shooting an unarmed man who was running away.

Michael Slager, an officer with the North Charleston Police Department, was arrested Tuesday, according to a statement from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, or SLED. If found guilty of murder, he could face up to life in prison or death.

The shooting took place Saturday morning after a traffic stop, SLED said. Video obtained by The New York Times shows what happened.

A black man, identified as 50-year-old Walter Scott, breaks away from the white officer. Something falls, and the officer fires eight shots at the man as he runs away. Scott, who appears to be unarmed, drops to the ground.

"I can tell you that as the result of that video and the bad decision made by our officer, he will be charged with murder," North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey told reporters Tuesday. "When you're wrong, you're wrong. And if you make a bad decision -- don't care if you're behind the shield or just a citizen on the street -- you have to live by that decision."

If you imagine the city of leeds. that is the number of police in the USA.

Now imagine giving everyone in leeds a gun..

Its amazing and a credit to the USA police that these isolated incidents are just that.

arista 08-04-2015 03:24 PM

is looking Evil

They will probably say the victim was trying to steal the policemans bullets...lol

Actually I think in this particular case given the high profile of cases like these, this officer will be the scapegoat and pay the price ie charged with Murder.

Whether he actually is convicted or serves any reasonable amount of jail time is another matter.

..it's not a scapegoat situation Nedusa, did you watch the vid..?...he shot him in the back several times...I don't see how he could avoid prison for this...

Jessica. 08-04-2015 03:37 PM

What a disgusting police officer, I hope he gets life in prison.

Why does it matter what race they both are?

AnnieK 08-04-2015 03:46 PM

If you watch the video as well he goes and drops his taser next to the guy he has just shot obviously trying to make it out he was in danger...he said he feared for his life but how could that be when the guy is running away when he is shot?

I don't mean he is a scapegoat for the crime.... it's clear he is as guilty as hell and caught bang to rights on video.

No....I think he will pay the collective price of so many recent failures to prosecute other similar cases where the offending Policemen have escaped serious prosecution even though the same video evidence exists to show their guilt.

I think the establishment will want to set an example to all police forces by prosecuting this man for 1st or 2nd degree murder and then pushing for a lengthy prison service. I think he is being made a scapegoat in this context.

I agree I think the majority of them do a wonderful job and for the most part it's a thankless one.

But yea there is no doubt that that this crazy man (who happens to work as a policeman) killed the other guy trying to run. I watched a bit of the video on the news and they stopped it before you could see anything graphic but they still played the audio of the gunshots.

Still though I'm not 100% sure he will get charged with murder.

Imagine you are from Leeds and you watch this video, you will agree he is a murderer.

..yeah I understand what you mean, Nedusa...I guess that I just don't agree that this incident could be described that way..that he could be made an example of for other high profile cases recently because he did shoot Walter Scott in the back eight times so for me it couldn't be anything other than a very long sentence if justice were to be served..and a deserved one, regardless of any other crimes...
