  • Poppy Smart, 23, accused builders of sexual harassment for wolf-whistling
  • Compared it to racial discrimination and asked other women to speak out
  • Building firm claims CCTV footage proves it was not one of their workers
  • Police investigated Ms Smart's complaint but took no further action

When Poppy Smart was wolf-whistled at by builders on her walk to work, she at first tried to ignore it.
But as the whistles and accompanying sexist comments turned into a daily ritual, the 23-year-old began to get upset.
Finally, after a month of unwanted attention from the men on the building site, the marketing co-ordinator decided she'd had enough – and called the police.

overreaction?

Well the title is misleading, "Poppy Smart, 23, accused builders of sexual harassment for wolf-whistling" if it were just that then I would agree it's an over reaction but blocking her way while making inappropriate comments everyday sounds like harassment to me

It seems from her selfies that she is fully aware that her tits are a means of getting attention but she has not yet worked out that she cant really pick and chose who gives her the attention?

again though standing in her way and blocking her is crossing the line, that's intimidating

are you ****ing kidding me? Men should be allowed to block a womans path as she's trying to go about her daily business because it's up to the woman to cross the street and get out of his path? Next you'll be telling me a woman deserves to be raped if she wearing a short skirt :/

Northern Monkey 28-04-2015 10:04 AM

Nowt wrong with abit of wolf whistling and playful banter.Blocking her way is abit too much though if she was scared.

so she says they did not move but last time I checked its not a law to make way when a busty girl walks towards you

Crimson Dynamo 28-04-2015 10:26 AM

No she says he walked towards her and blocked her way, not that he was already standing there and should move for her.

I think it was a well placed comparison, you've basically said women with big tits should expect harassment and they should just get out of mens ways if they don't want it

Why women like being wolf-whistled at

Women enjoy being wolf-whistled at. Shocking as it is, simple creatures that we are, we appreciate the compliment. Like the cab driver calling you "love", or your boss complimenting you on your dress, it makes your day just a little bit nicer.

What it doesn't do is send you running, tearful, to the head of Human Resources, or prompt you to lock yourself in the ladies' loo, feeling bruised or degraded

wow, your views on this are pretty shocking I have to say LT. I think I'll bow out now, as I don't think we'll ever see this from the same place.

"sounds like harassment to me "

Yes Niamh
could be

Ninastar 28-04-2015 11:32 AM

Women who say that 'wolf whistling is sexual harassment' need to get a grip... If there's more to the story though, then I can see why this woman is so upset.

full quote was actually :

She told Newsbeat: "Every day I'd walk past and they'd wolf whistle. They'd even come out of the building site to wolf whistle as I'd continue down the road.

"One of the guys got up in my face and all he said was 'morning love', but it was in a very aggressive way and the other one sneered.
"They blocked the pavement and I had to walk around them."
