Mr, Mrs, Miss... and Mx: Transgender people will be able to use new title on official documents
  • Gender neutral title 'Mx' slowly introduced to official forms and databases
  • First titles change in decades, is considered by Oxford English Dictionary
  • Heralded as showing the versatility of English to adapt to changing society

A new gender neutral title 'Mx' is to join the honorifics 'Mr, Mrs, Miss and Ms' on driving licences and other official documents, the first change to officially recognised titles in decades.

Royal Mail, high street banks, government departments and some universities all now accept Mx which is used by transgender people or other individuals who do not identify with a particular gender.
The title has been added, without fanfare, to official forms and databases and is under consideration by the Oxford English Dictionary for inclusion in its next edition.

Why?

billy123 03-05-2015 01:02 PM

I usually use Dr. prefix if any at all It has always seemed a weird outdated concept to me that anybody feels the need to know the sex of an individual in any correspondence.

Raph 03-05-2015 01:29 PM

I'm glad to see this, the more we get away from the gender binary, the better.

Denver 03-05-2015 01:40 PM

Is the whole point of transgender moving your identity from one sex to the other?

Northern Monkey 03-05-2015 01:50 PM

Great. What is Mx short for?Does it mean 'mix' as in mix gender?

More like More confusion?

T* 03-05-2015 02:11 PM

(I thought transgender people wanted to be known as the gender they feel as though, this individualises it more imo :/)

Pete. 03-05-2015 02:19 PM

This is good for the people who want to be acknowledged as transgender but most transitioning people I would think would want to be recognised as the gender they went to

Exactly! It's nice to see something for this topic. But I feel it excludes them even more. They are changing their gender identity, if they're ftm, they would want to use Mr, not Mx. And the other way round for mtf.

waterhog 03-05-2015 02:32 PM

great news - anything that can help anyone fit in if they feel outcast-ed must always be held in good light.

It's an option for trans people and that's good. Some people don't identify as a specific gender, this will help them massively.

Crimson Dynamo 03-05-2015 03:38 PM

mx sounds kinda spaceage

Mitchell 04-05-2015 01:51 PM

Good on them being able to have this option :)

I just use my lord title tbh

(best £15 I spent ever)

nicole_burks 10-05-2015 02:10 PM

The people that I know that are transgendered prefer Ms/Mrs.
imo let people be who they want to be

Doesn't it! I'm not sure I'll ever understand this stuff but if it makes people happy, why not. Was it Sweden that decided to do away with its words to indicate gender and replace them with a generic "it/they/them" word instead?

lostalex 12-05-2015 04:35 AM

why do we need a prefix at all? why can't we all just go by our actual names??

i say get rid of all prefixes.
