Was calling Adjoa 'Ebola' uncalled for

Wait for poll ;)

Raph 16-05-2015 07:17 PM

Who called Adjoa, Ebola?

Jay. 16-05-2015 07:17 PM

Yes, the woman knew exactly what she was doing.

Headie 16-05-2015 07:17 PM

Definitely. I hope ofcom received many complaints about it, although people won't be bothered because it's a generally disliked housemate.

An ignorant old hag in the BOTS audience.

What's worse is Rylan didn't even apologise on behalf of her. I remember Emma apologised when Aisleyne simply said the C word. But nothing in this incidence of racism.

elliebrew 16-05-2015 07:20 PM

I thought it was hilarious

Jack_ 16-05-2015 07:20 PM

I laughed at it in a 'wow' kind of way and I see why people are annoyed but at the end of the day she said a lot of nice things about her afterwards so I feel like she was just trying to be funny. If she'd said it in the context of criticism a la Jade Goody's 'Shilpa Poppadom' then it would've been really unacceptable but as it is this will all blow over by next week

Pete. 16-05-2015 07:20 PM

I was shocked by it, you don't call any black person Ebola

Drew. 16-05-2015 07:21 PM

It just slipped out

Maneki-neko 16-05-2015 07:21 PM

Yes. Really ignorant and uncalled for.

You don't call anyone Ebola full stop. It's not something to joke about.

bots 16-05-2015 07:23 PM

It wasn't in good taste, but neither was it a direct case of racism. Rylan wouldn't want to draw attention to it. Bots is a crap program with idiot guests, presenter an audience. The solution is simple. Don't watch it.

andybigbro 16-05-2015 07:23 PM

I don't think the woman meant it in a malicious way. It slipped out, she was probably doing of for a comedic effect because she forgot her name. It is easy to forget names at this early stage. The housemates are doing it too and they live together!

It was really stupid what she said, however I think it was a mistake.

Racism is comedy now? And regardless of forgetting her name, it is really obvious that she is not called Ebola.

adjoa 16-05-2015 07:24 PM

You could tell she had it ready to say

No of course it's not. I'm not condoning her behaviour. But I don't think it was racist. I think racist connotations can be attached to it. But so can a lot of things these days.

I do think people can be over sensitive these days though.

Ebola is a disease that strikes down all races. It is not directly a racist comment.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters 16-05-2015 07:28 PM

i'm not sure she meant it in a racist way but it is still offensive without the racist implications

Gypsy 16-05-2015 07:35 PM

She knew exactly what she was saying and I hope she has been banned from bbbots

If Adjoa was white she wouldn't have said it

saintjude 16-05-2015 07:49 PM

I was a bit shocked when she said it, not sure how you can get Ebola and Adjoa mixed up

Think she had it planned personally

Lee. 16-05-2015 07:56 PM

She was trying to be funny but she just came across as ignorant and offensive.

uniquedude 16-05-2015 08:27 PM

I do think it was deliberate but I couldn't help but laugh.

iRyan 16-05-2015 09:10 PM

Definitely has racist undertones

I know part of the racism in question has to do with the connotations of Ebola, but IMO what makes it racist is the whole "lol you don't have a 'normal' name so let me call you something else for comedic effect" shtick. That **** happened on Survivor this year with Shirin and it wasn't cute then.
