A warning thread.

If you get something on the Internet saying they're the Cheshire Police and that you've got to pay a £100 fine for seeing Pornographic content then don't do it as it's a virus, my idea is to turn your Laptop off before the timer goes down to 0, otherwise it won't even let you access windows otherwise.

My father in law recently got one of these lockdown things on his laptop. God knows how as he reckons he doesn't click anything dodgy ( :hehe: )

He apparently has to pay a hundred quid in bitcoin to some address or his files stay locked up :umm2: He wants me to sort it out..I have no idea where to start

That's too advanced for me I'm afraid Vicky, do you want me to ask around on the Forum for some advice?

Vicky I fixed a laptop with one of those on it a while back, it's a bad one and a nightmare to fix but can be done, start with malwarebytes in safe mode then a restore and if it doesn't work you may have to end up manually removing entries from the registry.

One important thing to check for with any of these 'ransom' type viruses is in the computer background/wallpaper settings for the ransom or warning image.

This happened to me a few weeks ago and I shat myself - I closed the laptop and took the battery out and when I reloaded it it was fine. But from reading about it they don't all actually block anything - sometimes the pop up just goes away. If you google it there's a few ideas on how to get rid of it, the safest I'd imagine is to enter the PC on safemode and then restore it
