..I know that it's representative of multiple things really but in this case of a 'public grief and mourning', it's being perceived by many as representative of condoning racism and therefore disrespectful to that grief ...this is one person committing one 'hate crime'...not that there aren't other hate or racist crimes but they're not appearing to be 'celebrated as a nation/en masse'..?...like this is so it seems an odd thing for it to be flown anyway...

Toy Soldier 20-06-2015 08:32 AM

I'm not so sure. Let's not forget: the St. George's Cross has been hijacked by racism and hooliganism in England and for many people has dark and violent white / English supremacist connotations. Should it be banned by law for that reason?

In fact, the good old union flag was used last summer in Glasgow to the same effect... The people carrying it were being as hateful, violent and bigoted as they come:

(Yes, that is a Nazi salute, there was a lot of that going on...)

I know it's not quite the same but then what is a flag but a picture? A symbol of a mindset, not the cause or a manifestation of one. I personally don't think any flag should be banned "by law". Not even Nazi symbolism. Stopping people from flying their flags doesn't change their nasty thoughts and opinions... It just hides them. I'd rather let them shout it from the rooftops so that I know what to think of them.

Ammi 20-06-2015 09:06 AM

..oh did this mean banned completely by law..?...then hmmm, I'm not sure either like TS because it also does it not, represent a freedom of speech/expression..?...so 'banning' would seem not right either....

No, political leaders want it taken down from the grounds of the State Capitol. The Confederate flag is a slap in the face to the United States and the United States government. It has no business being up on government property. The South lost the war. It's time to get over it.

Amazon USA has now removed it from sale
Walmart has now removed the flag from stores

Amazon UK has 5 left at 11:10AM

This isn't the same thing. Those are national flags that have been hijacked by mindless racists. The Confederate flag is a symbol... like the Nazi flag. No one would condone flying a swastika and I don't see the rebel flag as any different to that.

All flags are symbols. National flags just happen to be currently legitimate symbols. Last summer in Glasgow, the Union Jack became a symbol of pro-union sentiment and the saltire a symbol of pro-indy sentiment.

Of course some flags happen to have particularly negative associations and that makes flying them controversial and a massive statement. That makes choosing to display them questionable to say the least. But I don't agree with it being an issue of legality. Banning a flag does not ban a mindset... The flag itself is meaningless, what it represents is what's horrific.

Put it this way: if a Nazi moved in next door to me, I'd rather they put a Nazi flag in their window than NOT put one in. I'd like to know that they're scum rather than have them keep it on the down-low and be friendly with them and then find out later.

If scum move in next door you don't need a flag to know it.

I'm not suggesting banning any flags. Anyone can own a flag and anyone can display one. But not on government and civic buildings. Fly a Nazi flag in your back garden and everyone will think you're a dickhead. Fly one outside the town hall and it's a different matter entirely.

Rather than ban the flag, I would like to see anybody that has one to fly if at half mast in respect of those people murdered and to show support of the black community in general.

Smudgie, that is a brilliant idea.

I think that's different though, the confederacy were a government that fought for to keep Slavery legal. You can't really compare that to a bunch of lowlives who mistake racism for national pride.

I'm glad that stores aren't selling it anymore, the confederate flag is no different to a nazi flag or memorabilia.
