Eurosport wins Olympic TV rights for Europe

The European television rights for the Olympic Games have been awarded to Eurosport and its parent channel in a 1.3bn euros (£922m) deal.
It means the BBC could lose coverage of the Games in the UK from 2022, although Eurosport's parent company Discovery may lease back some of the rights.
The European rights are currently split up, country by country.
The deal will be effective for most of Europe from 2018, and in France and the UK from 2022.
Eurosport does not currently have a free-to-air terrestrial channel so it would either have to acquire one or license the coverage to another broadcaster like ITV, Channel 4 or the BBC.
In a statement, Discovery said it was committed to broadcasting a minimum of 200 hours of the Olympic Games and 100 hours of the Olympic Winter Games on free-to-air television during the games period.
Media watchdog Ofcom lists the Olympics as a category A event which must have live coverage made available to free-to-air channels.
Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, said: "The revenue generated from this long-term partnership will be redistributed by the IOC across the Olympic Movement to support the development of sport around the world."
The first Olympics to be broadcast on the BBC came from London in 1948. Since then, it has broadcast the Games continuously since Rome 1960.
The 2016 Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, while 2020's event will take place in Tokyo, Japan.
The host city for the Winter Olympics 2022 will be announced at the end of July.

They are great with Athletics and that's all I care about really so I'm not too bothered by this decision. The BBC have been neglecting athletics recently :nono:

Well this is disastrous, the BBC's coverage of London was second to none and I'm already looking forward to seeing how much time they're going to devote to Rio next year. Here's hoping they work something out

A channel dedicated to european sports will no doubt do a much better job than the BBC which has a very wide range of programmes, so this will probably give sports fans a lot better of an experience

I'm not sure about that tbh, I trust the BBC more than anyone else when it comes to covering big events, be it sport, politics, news etc.

Maybe it's different for other sports but I've watched snooker on Eurosport and it is just appalling compared to the BBC's coverage. The BBC has the best anchors, pundits and commentators, usually the best sets, best graphics, the list goes on really.

Complete opposite for Athletics. The BBC spend half an hour on studio and pundit commentary/discussion instead of live field action. Field action only seems to be shown when something major happens or a Brit is involved, and too much time is wasted on interviews etc.

Eurosport on the other hand give fair, unbiased coverage and often stream alot of live events and meetings that the BBC don't. It's different for every sport I guess.

Hm, it didn't seem that bad in London. Plus there was always the stadium feed on the red button that you could watch if you didn't want the studio cutbacks, I'm assuming (and hoping) that will be the same going into Rio, so Olympics wise it shouldn't be much of an issue

I guess it depends what you're after, I quite enjoy the punditry and studio time

It's bad news for the Olympics as a whole IMO though, individual sports on their own I can see what people mean but the Olympics as an event itself were covered spectacularly by the BBC in 2012. 24 (or 26 icr) red button feeds of all sports, wall to wall coverage on BBC1, rewind features on the website live coverage, the sport explainer VTs, the London flyover graphics, the best anchors in sport (Balding, Lineker, Irvine, Logan, Humprey etc), the best pundits in Jackson, Johnson, Thorpe, Redgrave, the best commentators Cram, Dickinson, Cotter, Jameson, Moorhouse etc.

The way the games as a whole was presented was impeccable and I honestly can't imagine any other network in the UK being as capable.

I wanted to watch USA vs New Zealand in the women's football today because someone was doing a watchalong on Twitch but the game wasn't on one of the two BBC Olympics channels.

I might have to subscribe to Eurosport for a month. :S It costs £6.99.

Yeah, there's one event on the the red button, and on on a BBC main channel, but there used to be about 20 online feeds for the last couple of Olympics.

it's honestly a travesty that this was allowed to happen... but an inevitability. The Olympics, Euros and World Cup should all be free to watch.

I mean I don't really mind paying a reasonable subscription cost. 6.99 isn't that much.

It's paying 30 or 40 pounds a month to get top-level football or Formula 1 that I don't like.
