Shilpa - \"Asian\" ?????????????????

Hi, I am Asian, but NOT the stereotyped "Asian" (Pakistani or Indian or the rest of the Desi community).

I just wanted to say, that I am confused, how Indian and Pakistani people call them selfes Asian, why cant they say 'Desi', which is what they are and much more describes them:conf::conf:

How can you just say I'm 'Asian' when so are Chinese, Turkish, Arabic, Persians but you dont look like them and there isnt a race that is scientifically called "Asian".

Its every where now, people actually label the UK of being multicultrual via, BLACK, WHITE and ASIAN (desi).

i think this is a sociological debate rather than a BB debate lol

^

Desi is the asian term LOL.
And turkish and chinese people are called asian too. So whats the problem. Its a sterotype that most asians are Indians, Bangladeshi, Pakistanis etc. Its something the western world needs to educate themselves on

rex3 12-01-2007 10:51 PM

well when you here Asian on the news? what do you immediatly think of.

if desi is the asian term, then use it and call your selfes, Turks dont say im asian, they say hi im middle eastern or turkish

Yeah but dont you call your selfs Asian, so aint that adding to the confusion in helping me get "Educated":conf::conf:

S2 12-01-2007 10:52 PM

^ its the way it has been for some time, so ofcourse you'd think brown skinned asians. But you need to educate yourself as I said

yeah but you call your selfs asian, why, dont you say desi?

doesnt that add, to the misconception, your telling me to get eduacated about?

S2 12-01-2007 10:56 PM

because desi is the term used by asians in the asian countries. When did you hear somone say "i'm not asian but i'm desi" to a non-asian? Hardly ever.

Anyway as krazy1 said

what the hell is that supposed to mean, you have clearly just dodged what iv been saying, if you dont want to CONFUSE people, easy, dont say your asian, say what you really are. Desi, indian, pakistani, bangladeshi or sri lanken. Not a whole CONTINENT

rex3 12-01-2007 11:25 PM

When you say Asian do you not think about other asian countries like Turkey, the Arabs, Persia, China and Japan

S2 12-01-2007 11:26 PM

you need to calm your hump down

kiran19 12-01-2007 11:26 PM

when the hell did I say I was Asian???? If this issue seems to irritate your ass, then why don't you go around educating everyone.

rex3 12-01-2007 11:43 PM

I have no racial intention here, but does any one else think its confusing?

- I mean its clearly disregarding the IDENTITIES of the other asian countries, that are non-desi

rex3 12-01-2007 11:48 PM

there is an obvious point here and bringing "hes a racist dont listen to him" routine is abit ignorant.

i aint a racist,

kiran19 13-01-2007 12:03 AM

we "desi's" are asians as well because we're apart of the asian continent, so what the hell is your problem? so you say turkish, arabs, and persians are asians as well, so what will you call them, if you call people like me desi?

"In the United States, Australia and New Zealand, Asian refers most commonly to people of predominantly East Asian or Southeast Asian ancestry; however in the United Kingdom, Asian usually refers only to South Asians"

-Wikipedia

Go tell all the websites on the internet to change it if it irritates you that much because they refer to indians "desi's" as Asians.
