Turkey holidays

Hey everyone

I am looking to see if anyone has any information about Turkey.

Basically I have booked a holiday to take my mum and my daughter to Turkey in August - I am in desperate need for a holiday after four years at university and working etc. I have saved up loads.

My dad has completely fallen out with me and told me to cancel it (I would lose all money because its in August) because he says its full of Muslims and with all the Tunisia drama etc.

I understand that he is worried about our safety because he loves us but I tried to say that we have had two terrorist attacks in the UK in the last ten years and in Paris in the last year. All of which were closer to home than Turkey is to Cyria and Tunisia.

Is there any concrete evidence that Turkey is a dangerous country or is it all scaremongering in the media?

Any information would be brilliant..

Annie

We've been to Turkey a few times, always found it lovely and people friendly,I think it's safe as it can be,no where is really safe, and I would probably think a bit more now of going back yet due to the closeness of Syria, but if you are on a complex I am sure they will have some sort of security in place, just be alert and careful.Your dad is probably just worried.

like everywhere that isn't as free as ours, just be careful.

just dont do anything stupid, like a friend of my friends who is gay and went to meet up with other gay guys, despite it being illegal over there. to cut a long story short, he could have been killed.

not saying you're a gay and that you're dumb enough to meet up with people over there, but still... just use common sense and you'll be fine

Stay on resort and respect the country's principles and you should be fine. There is always a risk involved in travelling, and everywhere is at greater risk these days than they used to be (including the UK which is on high alert)

Here is up to date advice from the foreign office https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey

It's probably safe enough if you're looking at the actual likelihood of anything happening. You're probably more at risk every time you cross the road in a busy area or drive your car on a bad road...

But then, as a dad with two little girls, I have to say I totally understand why he's anxious about it and he'll probably fret every minute that you're away. Mine are only 5 and 2 so they're not likely to be jetting off to Turkey any time soon, but I would bet I'll still worry about them just as much whether they're 2, 10, 20 or 50! It's easy to say to someone that they're not being rational but it's not always easy to be rational... He's probably just winding himself up with "what if..." thoughts and lashing out in a panic.
