...they just went straight to the competition then to a break. Why can't they do that all the time?

This. That way there is absolutely no room for bias (eg. "Housemate is [marcus dramatic voice] FURIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!, then the housemate saying the next day that they weren't angry in a conversation making the whole thing awkward)
