Toddler with Down's syndrome is put in washing machine for a 'laugh'

by the child's mum :umm2:

Note hand holding door

A MOTHER took this photo of a toddler with Down’s syndrome in a washing machine – and then put it on Facebook.

Since posting the picture of the little boy, Courtney Stewart has been branded a scumbag, questioned by police and allegedly assaulted on her doorstep.

But the 21-year-old, herself a mother, was in no mood to apologise yesterday when the Daily Record spoke to her.

She said of the boy, who was in her care at the time: “He loves the washing machine. We took a picture and it was a laugh.”

Stewart’s neighbours in Erskine, Renfrewshire, were horrified when they saw the image of the two-and-a-half-year-old inside the machine – with an adult’s hand holding the door.

A member of the public who contacted us about the picture said: “It was terrible to look at.

“For anyone, let alone someone who is also a parent, to take a picture like that and stick it on Facebook for a laugh is unbelievable.

“It’s no wonder people are angry about it.

“People in the town have been talking about it, because anyone who has seen it has been left shocked.”

Stewart took down the photo after she was reported to police.

She told us she was horrified on Sunday morning when two officers came to her door – but conceded that they were right to investigate the picture.

She said: “It’s horrible having the police at the door thinking you’re a bad person.

“I was shocked, but in a sense I’m glad they didn’t just take it as a joke and not come and see me. So I was thankful in that way.

Not enough context. Did he climb in himself for fun and she just snapped a picture for Facebook upon seeing him there? Or did she physically put him in there specifically to take a "funny" photograph? Two completely different situations to be honest.

For example, my in laws have a video of my sister in law as a toddler running down a steep sand dune, she gets faster and faster until she loses her footing, falls face first, and skids about 5 metres down the sand on her face.

It is one of the funniest things a I've ever seen. Apparently her aunt, there at the time, literally wet herself laughing.

However... If the same thing happened but because an adult PUSHED a child down a steep sand dune, that would obviously not be fine at all.

Horrible woman regardless of context.

Yeah I agree with TS. My cat gets into the washing machine and dryer all the time, he climbs in himself, it's quite funny, I never put him in there though against his wishes that would be cruel.........

Not to compare a cat and a child but you know what I mean

:(((

well is the kid crying and screaming? is the machine on? is he laughing?

if he was upset then yeah, i can imagine people reporting it to the police... but if he's laughing and having fun (as kids do with this sort of thing) then it's no big deal.

9 dots at the end of that last sentence?... 9? D: you do it don't you Niamh! You put your cat in the tumble dryer, set it to cool / slow, and laugh hysterically as it runs around like a giant hamster :(

No the lady says the toddler likes the washing machine

“He loves the washing machine. We took a picture and it was a laugh.”

She said the door had not been closed on the boy, and the machine was unplugged as she is waiting for a new one to be delivered. (mind you this is after the sh1t-storm she is saying this)

regardless of how safe it was, is she sure that the child (which has learning disabilities) is fully aware of the distinction between going in with plug off and mummy there or not?

When I read the story on the DM site it said the boy had climbed in the washing machine himself and then she took a picture. Been blown out of proportion tbh especially with the fact he has downs syndrome constantly being highlighted as though she's also mocking the disabled :umm2:

I think the fact the mornic mother posted the image on Facebook rather is the story than the reaction

Exactly. Toddlers, with or without Downs Syndrome like to do stuff like that. When my son was a toddler, everytime we visited my mom the first thing he'd do when we went into the kitchen is get into this cupboard that she had that was always empty and close the door, it's what they do

and dont think I dont know that all the blokes who are looking at this story are not thinking

Watch any episode of You've Been Framed or something like that and it will be full of clips of children doing silly things, falling over, getting hurt etc. that have been sent in and put on national television for our amusement, no one has ever had too much of a problem with that

I don't think that woman is the boys mother, it says "But the 21-year-old, herself a mother" that seems to imply, she's a mother but not this childs mother.

Also, isn't videoing it encouraging it?

the videos in general dont know that, for example little Jeannie's hair is about to catch fire on the birthday candles or that wee Johnny is about to crash his bike into the local canal

They're not the only things, for example there's alot of videos of small children with dogs, that to me is more dangerous than taking a picture of your child who's climbed into a washing machine

To be fair, sometimes the kids in those clips look properly injured and upset, and the laugh track is like "HAHA. HAHAHA. STUPID LITTLE **** HAHAHAHAAA."

And I'm like hold on a minute... Is this even funny? Should people be laughing at this child's misfortune??
