6 stabbed, by repeat-offender, at Jerusalem Pride event

Some of the photos are horrifying, so I wouldn't search for them unless you can stomach it - particularly the one of security wrestling him to the ground as he has his knife embedded in some poor girl's back :(

Police have arrested a man after six people were wounded in a stabbing at the Gay Pride parade in Jerusalem.

A police spokesperson identified the suspect as the same man who stabbed three people at the parade in 2005.

Yishai Schlissel, an ultra-Orthodox Jew, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for that attack and was released from prison three weeks ago.

Two of the injured are in a serious condition, the ambulance service said.

Eyewitnesses told Israel's Haaretz newspaper that the attacker emerged behind marchers and began stabbing them while screaming, before being tackled by a police officer.

Yishai Avior told Israel's Channel 2 TV he heard screaming and saw three people on the ground bleeding.

"People ran in every direction to take cover... There was immense panic and shock,'' he said.

The parade continued after the wounded were taken to a hospital, with protesters chanting "end the violence".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack contradicted the country's "basic values".

"In the state of Israel the individual's freedom of choice is one of basic values. We must ensure that in Israel, every man and woman lives in security in any way they choose. That's how we acted in the past and how we'll continue to act. I wish the wounded a speedy recovery," he said in a statement.

President Reuven Rivlin condemned the stabbing as a "terrible hate crime".

"People celebrating their freedom and expressing their identity were viciously stabbed," he said.

"We must not be deluded, a lack of tolerance will lead us to disaster. We cannot allow such crimes, and we must condemn those who commit and support them."

Hundreds of police are deployed along the parade route to prevent violence breaking out. Jerusalem police spokesman Asi Ahroni told Reuters there was a "massive presence" of police at the parade but "unfortunately the man managed to pull out a knife and attack".

The event has long been a source of tension between Jerusalem's secular majority and its Jewish Orthodox communities. Israeli police granted a permit for 30 right-wing religious activists to protest by the Great Synagogue, close to the parade route.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews have previously gathered in the city's Mea Shearim quarter to protest against homosexuality.
it is growing increasingly tiring and futile arguing against the death penalty the more events like this happen

So true. Good to see them continue their march, that was courageous. WTF is wrong with people...?

A photographer captured the moment the man reached for his knife, moments before the attack began ..

Horrifying. The picture of him putting a knife in a girls back was retweeted on my TL.

And people wonder why pride is still a thing.

I know most people aren't religious, but religion is supposed to be a thing that makes you happy. I can't understand people who suffer from their religion, people like this... I can't think of a word low enough for him.

I'd be depressed and hateful if I had that beard tbf

i am only making jokes to ridicule him not the situation

Suze 30-07-2015 07:03 PM

I hope the two in a serious condition pull through.

Can't understand why that man only got 12 years in the first place? But then again I can never understand some light sentences given for some murderers.

Gstar 30-07-2015 07:05 PM

Hope he gets stabbed 6 times

Braden 30-07-2015 07:18 PM

I don't even know what to say

Z 30-07-2015 07:35 PM

Do you think he spent his entire sentence plotting doing exactly this when he got out? **** sake.

lostalex 30-07-2015 08:47 PM

and some people still wonder why we need pride parades?
