Everyone focusing on Farrah's homophobia but overlooking Chris's transphobia...

Do you watch the show? I do. I watched the last two series. I watched the one with Jim Davidson. I didn't watch the one with Frank Maloney or Kelly. I know Frank, but I don't know Kelly. It's very difficult because he was a good friend of mine and I just don't know how to come to grips with it because he is not the same person at all. I haven't met Kelly, not for any reason, it's just not happened and I don't quite know how to approach it.

I think this is ignorance rather than pure transphobia but it's still transphobic and Kellie has responded:

The boxing promoter said she "hasn't had a brain transplant" so isn't a different person

Kellie Maloney has hit back at Chris Ellison after the actor claimed "he is not the same person at all" since her transformation.

The boxing promoter, who underwent a sex change last August, appeared on This Morning today to speak about movie The Danish Girl, in which Eddie Redmayne plays Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sexual reassignment surgery.

While speaking about people's opinions of someone who goes through a transformation, she pulled the former Bill actor up on some comments he made ahead of going into the Celebrity Big Brother house.

Speaking on This Morning, as you can see above, Kellie said: "Take Chris Ellison, he made a comment about me saying 'I've met Frank but I haven't met Kellie. He is not the same person at all.'

"But I am the same person. I haven't had a brain transplant. He's supposed to be an educated person.

Chris admitted last week that he is struggling to "come to grips" with Kellie's transformation and claimed it is because "he is not the same person at all".

The CBB contestant admitted he was good friends with the boxing promoter before she transformed into Kellie but hasn't seen her since because he isn't sure how to approach her.

He's 68 so probably has old-fashioned views but it's still disrespectful calling Kellie a "he". I'll give him another chance since I think he's just ignorant tbh (despite people telling me I wouldn't give a male housemate a second chance over offensive comments )

Are you serious dragging this up to defend your favourite? Anybody will struggke getting use to someone who they known for years then going through a sex change you can be expecting someone to automatically accept it aslong as there not rude or disgraceful about it there is no problem

Moosething 04-09-2015 11:05 PM

He wasn't being malicious

Janice is my favourite so not sure what point you're making there. Lets remind you of your favourite rule - you are not allowed to discuss members, only the housemates :pat:

If Kellie is offended by it then obviously the comments aren't completely fine are they?

Calling someone a "he" when she does not identify herself as that is transphobic. I think Chris is just ignorant and doesn't know better, and I feel bad that he hasn't had chance to get to know Kellie, but he shouldn't have misgendered her deliberately like that.

smudgie 04-09-2015 11:15 PM

If he has known Frank for years as Frank and not yet met Kellie then I shouldn't wonder at him calling her him.
In his own mind he still thinks of her as Frank.
Perhaps they should meet up after the show finishes and get yo now each other all over again.
I can't understand why Kellie would say she isn't a different person, of course she is, she used to be Frank.

Well, I don't think everyone's "overlooking" it, I wasn't even aware of this.

There's a big difference in that Chris' words don't seem to have been maliciously intended (very different from "gay homo"). He's definitely ignorant on the subject but he himself admits as much.

That said, it would be good for ignorance on the topic to be tackled.

Well Chris hasn't aired those views in the house, which is why it isn't being discussed..

I agree. Although I think Chris's views are kinda relevant here since he stated it in his official Big Brother interview for the Channel 5 website. And the fact Kellie took offense.

Like I've said before, it's more ignorance rather than transphobic hatred so we shouldn't be too harsh on him, but it also shouldn't be overlooked either.

Sadly it doesn't look like Tila will be put back in the house :(

Jason. 04-09-2015 11:37 PM

I miss Tila :(

LukeB 04-09-2015 11:38 PM

I don't think people know about this or like Jake said he hasn't aired his views..That's why Farrah's comments are focused on because it was aired and it is unfair how Tila's comments got brought up and she got ejected and others are overlooked. I just think Farrah is really ignorant and has to get personal, I know it was a task but she should have used her brain and think of other ways to do it.

Tila was supporting Nazism though, she shouldn't have even been let in the house with those views so I'm sorry but there's no foul play here really apart from the fact that BB let her in the house in the first place.

If he's known Frank as Frank for god knows how many years then obviously he still thinks of him as Frank. It would take quite a while to have to get to know a male friend of many years again as a woman. That is not anything phobic,Just human nature.Sex changes are not human nature, they are a man made creation which can be very confusing.

Beso 06-09-2015 07:47 AM

Funny how on live feed on friday night he was telling a story about going to the funeral of one of his closest friends who was a drag queen, i know its different to the transgender issue but it still gives an incite into his life and friendships, so i doubt that he meant any harm.

Papillon 06-09-2015 08:13 AM

Even Kelly has said herself she is completely different to Frank.

Kelly is much calmer, less judgemental & has more empathy as a woman.

So I'm little confused at Kelly's outrage response :conf:

Pete. 06-09-2015 08:21 AM

The exposé :clap1:

Josy 06-09-2015 08:31 AM

That's not transphobia, that's someone that has known and been friends with Kelly for a long time when she was Frank and is taking some time to adjust to the change, it is a big change after all, just like Audley was finding it a bit odd at first, it's to be expected.

Kizzy 06-09-2015 08:43 AM

If you think it's ignorance and not transphobia then why does the title suggest he is transphobic?

Jamie89 06-09-2015 08:50 AM

I also disagree that his comments are transphobic. I think he's actually put it really well, because it must be very difficult for people to adjust to someone close to them transitioning and most of the time I bet people are afraid to articulate this through fear of being branded transphobic, so I respect Chris for his honesty.

I have some experience of this in that a colleague of mine (female) is married to a man who is currently undergoing hormone treatment as part of his transition from male to female. One of the most difficult things for her is trying to appear fine and supportive all of the time because whilst she does love him and is supporting his decision, it can't be denied that's it's a huge and sometimes difficult thing for her to deal with. We all handle situations differently and just because one person might find the process of achieving full acceptance more difficult than another person, it doesn't automatically make them transphobic.

And with regards to him saying "I don't know Kelly", Kelly herself talked about how she was a different person and would refer to Frank in the third person, disassociating him with herself. I don't think there are any sinister undertones to this comment.

lostalex 06-09-2015 09:25 AM

farrah wasn't homophobic. she was just calling james out on being a bitch. It would have been even funnier if she called James a lesbian instead of gay, because he's not even a man, so how can he be gay? he's much more like a lesbian.

and i'm so f'ing sick of seeing the bald chick pretend to cry. and it's kinda gross seeing the little hairs growing out of her head now that it's been 2 weeks, if she has alopecia was is she growing hair?? it looked like she had a blonde afro from certain angles tonight...
