After another BBC costume drama saw its smouldering male lead go skinny dipping, viewers have been left wondering whether male nudity is 'now compulsory' in TV adaptations.

Despite fans being whipped into a frenzy by the sight of Poldark's bare-chested scything, a skinny dipping scene in Sunday night's adaptation of The Go-Between failed to impress viewers who said BBC's costume dramas 'are getting a bit silly'.

Viewers took to Twitter after Ben Batt emerged topless from a lake during the remake of LP Hartley's literary classic, as he played hunky gardener Ted Burgess.

Actor Ben Batt's skinny dipping scene prompted one Twitter user to remark: 'It's getting a bit silly now'

In the adaptation of the 1953 novel, the actor was also seen scything in the field in scenes reminiscent of Cornish drama Poldark which aired earlier this year.

But it was his near-naked swimming scene that earned ridicule rather than plaudits on social media as the 29-year-old, who is best known for playing Joe Pritchard in Shameless, was seen stripping off in a moment reminiscent of Mr Darcy's in the BBC's adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

The male nudity scenes also follow the BBC's recent adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Lover in which actor Richard Madden played gardener Oliver Mellors and stripped off several times.

But other viewers praised young actor Jack Hollington, who played the innocent 12-year-old Leo Colston who carries messages between the upper class lady of the manor and her lover.

Emma Graham tweeted: 'The Go Between was superb and what a fantastic young actor too, one to watch.'

Nalika de Silva wrote: 'Jack Hollington in @bbc The Go Between some of the best acting I've ever seen from such a young person!'

Peter Graystone added: 'Jack Hollington, you may only be 14 but that was the finest TV performance of the year. The Go-Between. Brilliant and almost unbearable.'

Many fans also liked his expressive eyebrows, with Juliet tweeting: 'The boy in the Go Between has the most expressive eyebrows I have ever seen in my life.'

Whilst Faye wrote: '@BBCOne congratulations on finding the cutest kid with the best eyebrows ever! #gobetween.'

But viewers were less impressed with the cast's Norfolk accent.

Nick Coringly tweeted: 'Have to say though, farmer in The Go Between doesn't have any sort of Norfolk accent *I've* heard before.'

Another viewer wrote: 'Norfolk accent in The Go Between sounds about 200 miles out #westcountry @BBCOne.'

And to discuss the topic more seriously, I don't care if an actor does a topless scene or two as long as the character that his playing actually has a purpose on the show and doesn't just become an Oliver Queen from Smallville.
