Stella Creasy MP Perfectly Sums Up Why Tampons Are Not 'Luxury' Items

This is some new EU ruling

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/multim...8__465277c.jpg
the Labour MP Stella Creasy

[Stella Creasy summed up why
tampons are not 'luxury' items
during a discussion on the proposed
amendment to the Finance Bill on Tuesday.
The amendment would renegotiate the
five per cent tax applied to sanitary products.
Her joke-filled rant took aim at other
products that are not taxed,
such as Jaffa Cakes and razors,
while sanitary products are still
considered to be a ‘luxury item’.]

Niamh. 28-10-2015 11:43 AM

omg just read the article, they still voted not to remove the Luxury tax? That is actually outrageous.

Crimson Dynamo 28-10-2015 11:44 AM

there is an element of the fox about her

Razors are not zero-rated. They are subject to the full rate of VAT at 20%.

It's the EU that controls that, it's not up to national parliaments.

Tampons are great for stopping nose bleeds

and had to bring Police in.

Tampons are pretty posh though. What's wrong with Aldi own brand sanny pads?
Anything with posh rope or extra comfort or especially wings! Should be taxed....

Never tried that

Amy Jade 28-10-2015 11:55 AM

No doubt men decided this pathetic tax.

Crimson Dynamo 28-10-2015 11:55 AM

Tampons are good for packing fragile items in the post

MTVN 28-10-2015 02:22 PM

Don't think its an issue of inequality or misogyny really, it's not very logical but then there are numerous examples of inconsistency in the VAT system. For the record soap and toothpaste are subject to the full 20% VAT as well compared to the 5% that's on tampons

Mokka 28-10-2015 02:28 PM

Canada removed the tax on sanitary supplies this year... Just saying, get with the times UK :fist:

I think tampons should be rated the same as Polyfilla and other crack-fillers. :hehe:

Livia 28-10-2015 03:30 PM

I think all women should stop menstruating until this mess is sorted out.
