Coldplay are a British rock band formed in 1996 by lead vocalist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland at University College London (UCL). After they formed under the name Pectoralz, Guy Berryman joined the group as a bassist and they changed their name to Starfish. Will Champion joined as a drummer, backing vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, completing the line-up. Manager Phil Harvey is often considered an unofficial fifth member. The band renamed themselves "Coldplay" in 1998, before recording and releasing three EPs: Safety in 1998, Brothers & Sisters as a single in 1999 and The Blue Room in the same year. The Blue Room was their first release on a major label, after signing to Parlophone.

They achieved worldwide fame with the release of the single "Yellow" in 2000, followed by their debut album released in the same year, Parachutes, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The band's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), was released to critical acclaim and won multiple awards, including NME's Album of the Year. Their next release, X&Y, the best-selling album worldwide in 2005, was met with mostly positive reviews upon its release, though some critics felt that it was inferior to its predecessor. The band's fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), was produced by Brian Eno and released again to largely positive reviews, earning several Grammy Award nominations and wins at the 51st Grammy Awards. On 24 October 2011, they released their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, which received mixed to positive reviews, topped the charts in over 34 countries, and was the UK's best-selling rock album of 2011. On 16 May 2014, they released their sixth album, titled Ghost Stories, topping the iTunes Store albums charts in over 100 countries. Their latest release, A Head Full of Dreams, was released on December 4. It peaked at number 2 in the UK Album Chart.

The band have won a number of music awards throughout their career, including eight Brit Awards—winning Best British Group three times—five MTV Video Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards from 25 nominations. Coldplay have sold more than 80 million records worldwide. In December 2009, Rolling Stone readers voted the group the fourth-best artist of the 2000s. Coldplay have been an active supporter of various social and political causes, such as Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign and Amnesty International. The group have also performed at various charity projects such as Band Aid 20, Live 8, Sound Relief, Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, The Secret Policeman's Ball, Sport Relief and the UK's Teenage Cancer Trust. They have also headlined major sporting ceremonies, such as the Paralympics 2012 Closing Ceremony and the Pepsi 2016 Superbowl Halftime Show.

Excited for another album that sounds exactly like the last 3 they've released

Shaun 30-10-2015 08:14 PM

^and yet somehow still worse

zakman440 02-11-2015 03:58 PM

...it's pretty safe to say that this is happening.

They're also rumoured to be guests on TFI Friday and the Radio 1 Breakfast Show this week so perhaps a new single is on it's way?

Firewire 02-11-2015 04:10 PM

similar artwork to years and years

Martin has previously likened Coldplay's upcoming album, A Head Full of Dreams, to the final Harry Potter instalment
Eh?

Kizzy 02-11-2015 04:34 PM

The last one? naw..... Have to say though I only truly liked their first 2 albums.

Marsh. 02-11-2015 04:38 PM

I am partial to a bit of Mylo Xyloto

zakman440 03-11-2015 03:31 PM

Erm...

Ashley. 03-11-2015 03:44 PM

Ugh I really hope they improve and go back to their old style bc they've really downgraded with their past few albums.

X&Y and AROBTTH were good.

zakman440 04-11-2015 03:38 PM

They've just posted this on their Twitter - it sounds great!

zakman440 04-11-2015 05:04 PM

...all the signs are currently pointing to an official announcement on Friday. They're rumoured to be special guests on TFI Friday, plus Chris Evans has teased a 'special announcement' on his Radio 2 show on Friday (skip to 2:20:17 on the link below).

I loved their first albums and then hated them but paradise played in the hospital when my brother passed away and I just find myself drawn to them. Even though I find a lot of their stuff samey

zakman440 06-11-2015 06:46 AM

They're LIVE on Radio 2 NOW!

They're playing TFI Friday tonight instead of Elton John! Also, the new single Adventure of a Lifetime is bloody brilliant.

I NEED to get tickets for this. I tried to get tickets for their Ghost Stories tour last year but they sold out as I was buying them :(. Hopefully I'll manage to get them this time round.

I've updated the OP with a ton of Coldplay info to make this one central Coldplay thread. I shall update the Album spoilers with links to the songs in due course.

zakman440 20-11-2015 04:55 PM

Also, I'm afraid that those who are wanting them to go back to their earlier style in their new album are going to be largely disappointed (if this review is anything to go by):

I wish they would go back to there earlier music
