Should Catalonia be allowed independence?

They held a referendum back in 2014, where 80.76% of the population there voted for independence. Spain, however, refused their independence and said that the referendum was 'illegal'.

What do you guys think?

(I found out about this on wikipedia and read through this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catala...ferendum,_2014)

absolutely. and they should use any violent means necessary if the spanish don't respect that. just like the USA vs. Britain in 1776.

Yes, it is quite clear when you spend time in Barcelona that despite not being officially independent, it pretty much is anyway. Every street you walk down you are going to see dozens of Catalan flags, and a lot of people there won't speak Spanish (they speak Catalan).

It is something that will definitely happen eventually.

Sometimes things aren't that simple. If that area has resources that the rest of Spain need, then it may be non-negotiable.

If they really want to be independent and be a country of their own, they should should be let be one.

But Spain wonīt let them, because of the already mentioned reason, that they are the richest and most resourceful county in Spain, and they donīt want to give that up and become just a trading partner instead of owner.

That was a dumb poll with a tiny turnout, there is nowhere near that level of support in reality

Free Catalonia

With Spains present financial crisis, this probably isn't a good moment to be talking about independence. The Spaniards presently have massive debt and if a divorce was to happen, Catalan would inherit a fairly large chunk of that debt. It would lose its euro and so any debt would have to be paid back in foreign currency which kind of ensures Catalan would bankrupt itself in little more than a year.

Calderyon 17-11-2015 07:45 PM

^ Then there should be a real Catalonian wide yes-no poll, so the matter can be put to rest once and for all.

Without bloodshed.

If they want to go then they should be allowed to leave.

I don't understand this idea of repressing people on what they want for their area.

Do you honestly think people are repressed in Spain?

Repressed might not necessarily be the right word to use, but every country (even the so called democratic ones) like to restrict people's rights to try and make a movement, even if it's a peaceful one that's not physically harming anyone.

I completely disagree with that
