File this one under stranger than fiction. Donald Trump has bigged up "respected columnist" Katie Hopkins and she has replied to thank him.

The frontrunning Republican candidate is known for his absurd outbursts in speeches and on Twitter, and interrupted his latest ridiculous rants to hail the trollumnist we first got to know all those years back on The Apprentice.

"The United Kingdom is trying hard to disguise their massive Muslim problem. Everybody is wise to what is happening, very sad! Be honest," Trump shrieked.

Danny Dyer nailed it with his response, writing: "Is it me or is this geezer completely off his strange looking nut."

For her part, Hopkins posted an image of a petition to axe her previous column in The Sun and replied: "Thank you sir - #standstrong you have support in the UK. The liberal left love a petition!"

Hopkins was criticised for writing "show me bodies floating in water" in a controversial column about refugees.


The newspaper deleted a tweet promoting her, though others still remained on its timeline.

Hopkins later moved from The Sun to the Daily Mail's website.

Trump has tried to grab attention in the race to become the Republican candidate for the US presidency with a series of increasingly bizarre and incendiary comments.

Most recently, he called for a "total and complete shutdown" of Muslims entering the US.

Mind you she was a columnist in the UK's most read newspaper and is now on one of the most viewed websites in the world so it might be a reasonable assumption that she was well respected
