Krankies actress in 'Yellowface' racism row [merged - 'Ab Fab movie in racism row']

:omgno:

The 68-year-old plays a male Japanese fashion designer called Huki Muki in the forthcoming Ab Fab movie, set for release next summer, which has caused a number of fans to call the casting choice ‘racist’.

Influential Korean American actress Margaret Cho, who appeared in the film Face/Off with John Travolta as well as television shows including Sex And The City, accused the film of ‘yellowface’, which she describes as ‘when white people portray Asian people. And unfortunately it’s happening in this film.’

‘I am ********** sick of yellowface. Have some respect. Hire Asian actors for Asian roles,’ Cho fumes online. ‘I’m disgusted. Yellowface is racism. Sorry. It’s unacceptable. Not now. I was thrilled about [the] Ab Fab movie, but now I just can’t be. I’m very disappointed.’

She added: ‘When roles written for us are played by white actors — it’s an outrage. We’ve tried to shame racism out of existence but I guess some people really don’t care. They’re shameless but NOT BLAMELESS.’

How you see this?

user104658 16-12-2015 04:37 PM

:joker: those pictures.

Firewire 16-12-2015 04:40 PM

I don't think she did yellowface, doesn't look like it from those pictures. The character should never have been Japanese though.

(I have a feeling they wrote the role with Janette in mind)

Crimson Dynamo 16-12-2015 04:42 PM

Huki Muki

:laugh2:

So Americans shouldn't play British, nor British Americans, what about poor Manuel in Fawlty Towers ... where will it all end :worry:

Panto season is going to upset a few people then. I don't think we've got enough Asian actors for all the productions of Aladdin that'll be opening any time now.

I saw Shakespeare's Henry V, clearly a white man, starring a black actor as the king and it was the best production of Henry V I've ever seen. Edris Elba is being suggested as the next James Bond, again, clearly a white man if you've read the books. If a white man played Othello, and many have, is that racist too? How many actors have played Shylock or Fagin who aren't actually Jewish? Who cares? No one...

Racism is about intent not about making people walk on eggshells over something that's obviously not meant to be an insult.

Could

Japs Eye now be in peril?

:worry:

To be fair though. There is a bunch of actors who appear in Ab Fab and sometimes appear as different characters so it wasn't a case of "casting a white woman in an Asian role" but more writing a role for this particular actress that is also Asian. Nobody was going to get that part other than her.

Nice of them to still be giving Verne Troyer work anyway

Find it kinda funny Margaret Cho of all people is weeping over racial sensitivity after her painfully unfunny portrayal of North Korea at the golden globes this year.

Ab Fab movie in racism row

Scottish comedian Janette Tough, best known for playing Wee Jimmy Krankie in Eighties TV shows, makes a cameo as a male Japanese fashion designer called Huki Muki in the forthcoming Ab Fab film. However, some fans have denounced the casting choice as racist.

Tough appeared dressed in a red, polka-dot robe, winged sunglasses and a short black bob, styling very similar to that worn by Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese writer and artist known for her fascination with polka-dots.

Korean American actress and comedian Margaret Cho, accused the film of “yellowface”, which she described as “when white people portray Asian people. And unfortunately it’s happening in this film.”

Many of Cho’s 400,000 twitter followers shared Cho’s outrage.

Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French, the executive producers of the Ab Fab movie, and BBC Films are yet to comment

The movie is clearly using a white actor to perpetuate exaggerated asian stereotypes, so is it appropriate in 2015? No. It's racist point blank.

In what way?

lostalex 16-12-2015 05:39 PM

asians are not really a discriminated race though. asians actually do better in america than even whites in america. they are over performing. they need to be taken down a notch or two. (i mean the ones with the eyes, the east asians, not the brown kind)

Why is the fact that it's a white actor important though? Surely the whole point of acting is that they're portraying someone who isn't them, so why should they have to be same nationality? If the movie itself is racist then that's a different matter but I disagree with the principle that if a character is asian they HAVE to pick an asian actor, regardless of who is best for the role, because that is positive discrimination, which is still discrimination.

I'm personally in favour of affirmative action, but that's another subject for another thread..

It matters because if an asian actor is playing an exaggerated asian stereotype, then it is still problematic though the asian audience may still see the movie and see it as light-hearted - something that is not attacking them. If a white actor plays the exaggerated asian stereotype, there is the real risk that it could be interpreted as racist because it can be very easily viewed as mocking and generalising an ethnicity.

What. A crock o poo.
It's called acting love.
Get over yourself...you didn't get the part.

or to sum up another way, if people want to find offence in something they will until the fun and humour has been sucked out of life completely.
