Consent

I don't suppose anybody watched this last night did they? It was about a rape case and shows the court case and the lead up etc. I also thought he weren't guilty and then when i seen it at the end that he actually was i was quite shocked.

I doubt anyone else will have seen it, nobody every seems to do watch my programs.

Diablo 22-01-2007 01:38 PM

I started watching it but I had to be up at 4.00am for work so i only saw the first half hour.. it looked ok, i should have recorded it..

Ella 22-01-2007 01:39 PM

I watched it! It was really good, Makes you think twice about how you judge people in these cases.

Slartibartfast 22-01-2007 01:57 PM

I watched it, interesting stuff.

I to thought he was innocent, especially with the way the program makers showed her reacting afterwards espcially with her boss, and I kinda think the show wanted the viewer to think he was innocent.

In any event, I think if the jury had come back with a guilty verdict, they would have just shown that he was actually innocent (eg instead of the final scene being him raping her we would instead have seen her consenting to the sex). There was nothing to stop the program makers doing this and as the point of the show was to challenge our thinking, I think they would have showed the "truth" to be the opposite of whatever the jury decided.

Still, it was an interesting enough show.

I think his confidence swung me the most which shouldn't really have happened as people like that are probably able to put on that big, 'Mr. Confident act' just to get off. Also seeing the girl too made me think she was lying but it was a good watch. It really would be hard to judge a case like that but it would be interesting all the same.

A couple of months back i went to sit in on a court case because i was interested to how they ran and although it was just a petty crime thing, it was still interesting to watch. I'm going to go again soon and sit in on a more serious case as i'd like to see how different they are to what they are shown on tele. I think the program though was the closest to a real one that you'll see as it was a real judge, solicitors etc.

Very interesting though.

I've been on Jury duty twice.. both times were very interesting.. I felt like shouting out questions every time one of the witnessess contradicted themselves..LOL

Crystal-Rose 22-01-2007 06:13 PM

LOL, you'd get held in contempt of court and spend a night in the cells!!

Judge threatened to hold me in contempt once when my mobile went off in court (and it was a particularly nasty child abuse case). Needless to say, I always check the mobile now anytime I'm even near a courthouse!

Good to see someone liking jury duty, people I know who have had to do it always hated it.

Legend 22-01-2007 06:26 PM

Everyone i have asked about it all hated it too. I really can't wait to do it (providing i get asked) and i'm not even legal to do it yet. :joker: I think it depends if your interested in stuff like that though, some just hate the whole 'court vibe' kinda thing whearas i'm the opposite.

Diablo 22-01-2007 06:26 PM

I liked it.. I found it all very interesting.. one was a serious assualt and one was a murder..

If there was such a job as a permanent Jury Member i'd be working as one of them lol..

Legend 22-01-2007 06:27 PM

I think that would be a great job, 'jury member' That job would suit me perfectly.

Slartibartfast 22-01-2007 06:28 PM

You could always become a judge, they get to hear cases every single day!!!

Diablo 22-01-2007 06:30 PM

I'd rather be a juror than a judge.. debating with the other jury members and then making the decision.. Guilty or Not Guilty or Not Proven..

We had a Not Proven and a Guilty.

cos i'm talking about it now, I wish i'd be called in again.. :colour:

Slartibartfast 22-01-2007 06:36 PM

I don't think they'll ever have permanent jury members though babe, sorry to ruin your dream!

They want to avoid any one jurer having undue influence when they are deliberating on their verdict. So if they had someone in their who was saying "Look, I've been on 100 juries and I know that guy is guilty" the other jurers might be more likely to listen to that person and their decision would be influenced. For the same reason, solicitors and barristers can't be called for jury service. (although I read a while ago they were thinking of changing that rule in England)

Looks like you'll just have to hope you get randomly called again

Diablo 22-01-2007 06:40 PM

I have years to wait cos my last one was last year.. :bored:

Maybe i can steal someones citation.. LOL

Slartibartfast 22-01-2007 06:43 PM

Careful now, you've gone from possible contempt of court to jury tampering there!!!

Diablo 22-01-2007 06:45 PM

lol.. i'll end up in the dock

Tanser_Man 22-01-2007 06:51 PM

It was a great program.

I knew from the start the dude raped her, he had a jack the lad look about his smug face.

I would love jury service, my sister had it about 6 months ago and they were doing a trial over some shootings in Birmingham, some of the jury members got threatend by a friend of theres.

Diablo 22-01-2007 07:11 PM

thats the downside.. the chance of being intimidated or threatened.. that never happened to me though.. thank god..

Well gun gangs arn't people you want to mess with, i mean there real guns! Not spud guns or something! Would have loved to have heard and seen the evidence put forth though.

Always had a thing for CSI and Law and Order, so the courtroom would be ideal!
