EastEnders: best year since the millennium?

What's been your favourite year of EastEnders since 2000 (or whenever you started watching)?

Denver 13-01-2016 08:04 PM

2009

I've loved a story from every year but 2007-2010 were the best years
Probably 2009 overall

2009 :flutter:

2007-09 was the golden era.

2005, Chrissie, Zoe and Sam were iconic

2001 and 2005 are heads and heels above the others for me, personally.

I know the "gangster era" took a right knocking from the press at the time but I preferred when EastEnders portrayed the East End as a menacing area with danger lurking in every corner. Not now that it's all sanitized and HD. Vincent doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Jack Dalton, Dennis Rickman, or Andy Hunter. He's a cheap imitation played by an equally laughable excuse for an "actor."

btw Dennis Rickman got stabbed

Agreed. Bringing back Daniella Westbrook in 2009 after Kim Medcalf had completely redefined the character in such a high-profile way is a strong contender for the single stupidest decision the producers have ever made. Not that I have anything against the former but I very much doubt that she'd have been able to pull of any of those epic scenes in 2005 (digging up the dead body, crumbling at the hands of Chrissie).

Ah yeah, that's right. I've just always had in my mind that he was shot from a distance given we didn't find out who killed him until Get Johnny Week (Danny Moon).

2001 was pretty incredible. The Slaters came in and pretty much became everything the Carters wish they were.

when I look back at the choice - I now remember why I have been complaining about EE. sorry to be a misery but it has been dyer for so long now as the options prove.

Absolutely. I partly blame John Yorke for allowing the show to descend into the abyss it's been wandering in and out of over the past decade and he's made some questionable decisions but that doesn't mean that the show wasn't truly firing on all cylinders when he was at the helm.

The Slaters did run out of steam towards the end, though. Lynne always played second fiddle to the other sisters and I can't actually remember her doing much more than scowling at people in the caff and moaning about her marriage with Garry so I can't say I was too fussed about her exit but they were on their knees by the time Zoe, Kat, (first time around) and Little Mo left. Sean was ace but Stacey's been dragged to oblivion and totally ruined as a character. I know we're supposed to sympathise with her current predicament but her and Kush both cheated Shabnam so I can't have any sympathy for her.

It's interesting you mention 2004 given the public perception of the show at the time and the constant media criticism. I guess it just goes to show that things weren't nearly as bad as they were made out to be.

2005, 2007, and 2009 were the holy trinity.

The only thing I can remember Lynne doing was having an affair with Beppe.
Little Mo needs to come back - there's basically naff all of the Slaters left now and the actress was amazing.

Little Mo was one of my favorite characters and Kacey Ainsworth always pulled it out of the bag. I liked her transformation from meek and mild to the genuinely strong, independent woman she became by the time she left.
