Something I've noticed with Twitter reactions to Megan's "ghetto" comment...

It seems to be ethnic people (mainly black) who are offended by the comment and tweeting about how wrong she was to say that etc... where as the white people seem to be saying "PC Brigade, How is ghetto offensive" etc.

I actually think Megan might get away with the comment without hardly any backlash tbh :/

LukeB 14-01-2016 10:25 PM

I think she was wrong to say that tbh and should get warned.

reece(: 14-01-2016 10:26 PM

Many white people are uneducated in how the ghetto term can be offensive to black people.

:clap1: I'm glad to see that most white member son here can see how the insult can be seen as racist. I was offended by it myself.

A lot of the people who are saying it isn't racist are saying things like "well white people live in ghetto's too" etc etc, but I think that misses the point. It's not about taking it literally, as in what a 'ghetto' actually is, but it's the fact that it is a term that some people use to describe black people. That's indisputable, whether people are aware of it or not. And I'd imagine that more black people are aware of it than white people, which probably explains what you've noticed there, Hayden.

RodHull 14-01-2016 10:46 PM

TBF while im against racism in all its forms Tiffany herself has described herself as Ghetto as a badge of honor so she cant complain when its thrown back as an insult.

And no I dont buy the whole 'reclaiming the word' crap, its offensive it is absolutely so stop describing yourself as it and others may follow suit

Vicky. 14-01-2016 10:48 PM

I'm usually one of those who think that people look too hard for racism, for example the chicken thing the other day...I really didn't see.

But...that ghetto comment, spat the way it was...definitely raised my eyebrows. It was obviously used in a derogatory way and I fail to see how it can be described as anything but racist tbh

Bailey2Be 14-01-2016 10:49 PM

This may be the wrong thread to post this in but.... I don't think it was right what Megan did tonight or how she used the 'ghetto' word tonight if she did actually callously mean to be offensive. But earier I don't think it was right when Tiffany was going off about Gemma in the diary room (not to Gemma's face) and saying things about her appearance etc. etc. Whatever your opinion of Gemma is fair enough but she didn't deserve to be called out on her weight because no one does. Yet people don't seem to be outraged by what Tiffany said and she 100% was a lot more vicious and ugly with what she said about Gemma. Yes Megan's behavior was not ok tonight but I think everyone is so quick to jump on the PC brigade!! It seems to be a pick and choose basket about what comments people decide to get 'overly offended' by.

alex_front2 14-01-2016 10:50 PM

But I do think a very large minority of white people do see black people as different to whites and as ghetto and trashy. Loads of white people are surprised at X black person is educated " oh, he's really articulate ". I went to the theatre with 2 black pals last year to see Chekhov's Uncle Vanya and these 2 white women were talking in native German to each other and said something like " the blacks are watching Chekhov, I'd thought you'd be at at a rap concert".

Black people are depicted in media as trashy and when a black person does something positive or elegant the fact the person is black is swept under carpet. Person commits as crime...they are black. Black Person saves someone's life...they are a person.

Black people are only depicted in Hollywood as slaves, civil rights causes, racial victims, sports people, sidekicks to ehite characters, rap musicians. Reinforcing a ghetto stereotype which is why people are shocked when Harry Potter's Hermione as an adult casts a black actress as some white people can't envisage a black person being like a white person.

Well like I said Tiffany described herself as Ghetto the other day with Jonathan, so I find it hard to have sympathy but its an unpleasant term for sure.

All good points but the Black people themselves in the media and public eye have a responsibility as well, many of the largest black stars on the planet revel in the persona of being 'ghetto' and 'gangsta' so its no surprise ill educated white people find that an easy stereotype to throw around.

Doesn't make it right for sure, but I've never been a fan of the whole romanticizing the ghetto gangsta lifestyle that was so prevalent in the 90s and early 00s largely pedaled by black stars of both genders.

Yeah do we want to do this for every positive black role model (eddy murphy hugely questionable but ill let it slide) there are 4 or more bad ones, self made bad ones, not demonised... but who revel in their low moral conduct

To be clear I think its desperately sad and its also massively driven by white media corporations who sell that but the black stars who are complicit in reinforcing that stereotype are just as much to blame.

Clearly you don't understand the concept either.

Reclaiming a word is when you take an offensive slur historically used against you, and to try to take some of the 'pain out of the wound' (i can't think of the phrase here but I hope this makes sense to you) by using it as a term of endearment. It makes it so that word cannot be used in a pejorative way against you, because it would simply be a self-descriptor. The word 'queer' is a good example of this, it's even made its way into the sexuality acronym 'LGBTQ'. The meaning was changed from an insult to gay people to a descriptor of those outside the straight/LGBT descriptors of sexuality.

Also just out of curiosity, are you a minority yourself?

Not only is it racist, but in the clip she was about to say something else, her teeth went together and she raised her lip as if she was about to say something that began with an "n," but she stopped herself, and a brief pause occurred before she said "c--."

It's pretty clear she was about to say you know what.
She probably realized what she did and what she said as she was being escorted out because she was like, "Don't put this on telly! Don't put it on telly!"

alex_front2 14-01-2016 11:03 PM

Samuel Jackson , Wesley Snipes , Jamie Fox et al usually either play parts only black actors can play eg Will Smith's Mohammed Ali bio pic or play black only stereotypes eg Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction, jive talking Will Smith's Men in Black, Empire etc. They rewrote a Tom Cruise part when Will Smith landed the role. Why not keep the role the same. Why can't an actress who is black play the perky preppy Emma Stone/ ReesecWitherspoon/ Jennifer Lawrence type roles?

If a tv character likes country music or opera, likes antique fairs or Roman history the actor cast will be white. If the character likes rap, from a poor area etc then black. Stereotypes.

Tiff is seen as the angry loud scary dangerously aggressive black woman who needs to go for housemates safety. Meagan will de depicted as feisty girl who has had a few drinks. Were Kristina , Danielle cowering from Meagan when she ranted? Yet hms were " scared" of Tiff. A lot of white people do see black people as aggressive. In fact Megan was so threatening security came in, but she's white so its all innocuous high jinks.

Also Meagan menacingly approached Tiffs bed. Tiff never actually approached anyone in her rant

I don't think it's a good idea to try and blame black people (even partially) for racism against them here. That may not be what you are trying to suggest, but you are definitely inferring it.

Thanks for the lesson... Im well aware... I was referring to the word ghetto If anyone had used that argument (preempting it)

And even that aside its still massively personal to each person there are plenty of gay people and racial minorities who detest these reclaimed words cause its to painful or vile for them to here cause they witnessed such horrific acts caused by people who used them.

EspeonBB 14-01-2016 11:07 PM

In a lot of cases 'ghetto' is just a substitute for 'black' and ghettos are mainly associated with black people even if white people do live in them

Beso 14-01-2016 11:08 PM

She is from the ghetto though and sure acts like shes in one, so the comment was a fair one.

Not for racism of course not that stems back 100s of years... no im referring to the use of the word ghetto and reinforcing the tough 'gangsta' image that went along with.

Josh above noted how most black people in films etc are depicted as drug dealers and such like, well black people themselves are complicit in that. They have to take some responsibility for when stupid badly educated girls like megan then throw the term out as an insult imo

Go to the deep south talk with people who saw their loved ones murdered by the KKK and see if they think black people describing themselves as ghetto or using the N word as a term of endearment is ok. Most won't

Many of Will Smiths roles could be played by white or black people same with the other actors mentioned.Yes some films may be written for a black actor but many are not.Morgan Freeman has played many roles which are not written for any particular race. The guy in the new Star Wars film's role could be played by anyone.I'd say that for many of the examples you've given there are many examples to counter it.Obviously Mohamed Ali has to be played by a black person.
