I never understood the gaining it part until I achieved a big goal. The "now what" phase is not a good place to be :( Because you know if you just set another big goal, it's the same thing when you achieve it. It's truly about the journey!

I don't see either as a tragedy.
To lose your hearts desire means that you had the joy of having it, however short a time.
If you gained your hearts desire then the secret is to not only appreciate it but keep telling yourself how lucky you are.
