It does look really dodgy on the face of it. What would be their reason for doing it though? Surely if they were, they would know that it would be noticed at some point by someone. And I can't understand what benefit there would be to the government of censoring the autocomplete function (because from the looks of it, it's not search results where there is a discrepancy, it's just the autocomplete suggestions?) So I'm just confused as to what possible motives there could be, given that the risk of it being noticed is so high, they would surely have to consider it as being something of such great importance that the risk of a public backlash would be worth it. But why would google autocomplete suggestions be THAT important?

If you type in 'conservative party' you get a few negative suggestions.

kirklancaster 04-02-2016 11:45 AM

Do you mean this James?

"A similar override occurs for searches including “Christians are”, “Jews are”. Interestingly, “Muslims are” offers just one autocomplete: “Muslims are not terrorists”."

...just tested all of this out and it's true. This is genuinely ****ed up.political messages being pushed through search autocomplete? wtf is that?

user104658 04-02-2016 09:12 PM

Their excuse is also utter BS. Everything else, every random meaningless term, gives four autocomplete suggestions. Both "Conservatives" and "Tories" have none. NONE. And they say this is because it's based on popular search terms? So no one is searching either of these terms? Err... no. It has been manually blocked.

It would be interesting to see if people in different parts of the world are getting different results.

the google auto complete is based on a lot of complex parameters, including popular searches in your area/country, the priority of the search word, advertising, your own search history. They will also reduce the prominence of some search criteria based on adult content, take down notices, complaints etc etc etc etc

So the short answer is they do censor content, but for many valid reasons

Its also not so much censoring as leading you down a preferred path.

No path is not a preferred path is it? I've searched using all the terms in the article and still no suggestions for me. I find it odd.
