Do TV shows focusses more on male coming out stories?

Soaps don't seem to have any female teenagers/young adults in a coming out story, it always seems to be males?

Thoughts?

EastEnders:

2014 - Johnny
2015 - Paul introduced as a young gay male.
2016 - Focusing on Ben coming out (although I swear he came out ages ago)

I think it's just hollyoaks that seems to be heavily tipped towards gay males (ste, JP, that scouse one, whatever parry glasspools character is called - versus Esther... and that's it). It seems fairly equal in emmerdale, coronation street and eastenders.

Yeah, there are a few bi/lesbian females in EastEnders but they never seem to have a young female involved in a coming out story.

Coronation Street had a couple if I remembering correctly.

i think there are only a few hundred lesbians in Britain so I guess as they are rare they dont feature so much?

Clare Balding is their leader

I don't really watch soaps, but Big Brother definitely has more gay men compared to lesbians. Would be interesting to know the ratio.

In relation to LGBT characters, Coronation Street has a majority of gay females compared to other soaps.

What's a lesbian? And where can I get one?

Aren't gay men more common than gay women? I know only one lesbian whereas I know about 40 gay guys

they are very rare but on some websites I frequent there are tons of them

:omgno:

TV has more lesbian characters than gay ones. They don't necessarily come out as they are already well-established. Being gay is still taboo and is why coming out scenes for males are shown more.

I thought it was about the same... maybe you just attract all the gay men towards you for some reason

And repel the lesbians :omgno:

we need to consult our own lesbian Ninastar about this and get the inside line

Just in general, gay men seem to be much more prevalent in the media than gay women.

It does seem about equal on Corrie but I do think EastEnders heavily slants toward gay males. There's been the likes of Sonia, Tina, and Tosh in the past two years but they've all been fully-grown adults, who would've presumably accepted their sexuality. All the coming out stories in recent years have revolved around males (Ben, Johnny).

Well focussing on one television show isn't really exploring the entire spectrum of television.

Also, Paul never had a coming out story. Like Tina, he came in as a gay character who was already out.

You're just watching the wrong programmes, there's loads of lessies in porn.

What I don't get with the male gays is why do they have to be camp?

..that's interesting as well, that it would be more males because the first one that I recall was Brookside and Anna Friel/Beth Jordache and Margaret, I think the other character was...Anna became a 'lesbian pin-up' with that storyline...
