IIRC Hughes in his first stint at Man U (before his return spell when Fergie was there ) he got really annoyed with players taking the p*SS out of his real name.

In May 2007, the then Blackburn manager Mark Hughes answers your questions on his playing and management career...

Why don’t you call yourself Leslie, your actual first name?

Colm Lynch, London

Because Mark’s my name, Leslie’s my father’s name. [Looking bemused, then smiling] No one has ever asked me that before! I was always going to be Mark Leslie Hughes, but maybe it sounded better or looked better on the birth certificate as Leslie Mark Hughes. That’s the only reason, but I was always going to be Mark.
Re: other managers as players, how cute does Eddie Howe look when he was a player (not that long ago to be fair but now he's quite hot) and it's obvious LVG has had a bad a nose job since he was a plwyer.

I think terrible players or non players often make really good - often better managers than good players eg Wenger, Roy Hodgson, Mourinho, Hiddink. Maybe their failure as a player has left them with something to prove, desperate for non playing football glory, maybe their careers are cut short or disappointing that they do other things eg go to university and get a bit more erudite and educated so they have more sophisticated tactics.

Quite a few of the top Portuguese sides deliberately hire non ex players or journey men/ poor ex players.
