A mother who was photographed in the middle of a Bernie Sanders rally breastfeeding her baby, inspiring a social media phenomenon with the hashtag #BoobsForBernie, says she is receiving hate mail.

Margaret Bradford, of Ohio, was at an event near Cleveland last week with her six-month-old daughter Harper.

“While there, she got hungry like babies do, and unbeknownst to me at the time a reporter took this photo of us,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

Ms Bradford, a supporter of public breastfeeding who has three children under four, shared the photograph and also urged other mothers to do the same.

“Honestly I’ve cried three times already from some of the hateful messages I’ve received, telling me my daughter should be taken or that I’m just an uneducated lowlife hick,” she wrote.

Could she not just get her mother to look after the bairn while she does cheerleading at a political rally? :umm2:

People are so prudish when it comes to what breasts are actually for. No doubt if it was a picture of a girl wearing really revealing clothes just for the sake of it no one would say a word

If she puts the pick on social media I am not sure what she expected?

Who actually gives a s**t though? Why do you care where and when she feeds her baby?

Idc that she's breastfeeding, but it seems a bit stupid to take your child to a political rally where it's gonna be packed and really really loud?

I suppose she is moaning about it and i am thinking well

1. seems a funny place to take a baby
2. dont put the image on social media and start moaning when the hate arrives

Now i'm all for women breast feeding anywhere they like but the fact she put on Facebook and asked everyone to share it suggests to me that she was looking for a reaction. Then she cried about it?

MTVN 08-03-2016 06:19 PM

Not appropriate

DemolitionRed 08-03-2016 06:56 PM

That baby looks totally un-bothered about the noise going on around her and as for her breastfeeding in a very, very public place; so frigging what, its not like you can see anything.

Americans are still well behind the times about breast feeding in public but thanks to people like her, times are improving. People who get offended by it are only offended by it because they see some sexual connotation in it. That's their problem, not the mother who just feeds her hungry child as and when required.

People who are offended by breastfeeding are beyond silly but it's dumb to take your baby to a rally, surely it's not good for their ears.

I just went and looked up to see if babies ears are more sensitive than adults and actually they are. A fire alarm is enough to damage a babies ears so the horns used a a rally definitely could.

Why is it a funny place to take a baby.. What is wrong with taking a baby to hear someone speak?
I have no idea why anyone would object to it, trolls are just sad losers maybe if they had been breastfed as a child they wouldn't grow up so retentive.
Shame she read and took on board anything they had to say.

After the whole "furore" over the original photo from the OP?

Kizzy 08-03-2016 08:50 PM

Laughable that the trolls have to attempt to denigrate Sanders supporters by trolling nursing mothers.... In the hope it will eclipse the white supremacists at trumps

Sorry but it's the mothers who I find arrogant in the extreme expecting their wishes to trump everyone elses, the world does not revolve around them and any breastfeeding should be done as discreetly as possible

Nah, can't get on board with that. By your logic, those stupid little man-buns that I keep seeing guys with these days should be banned or kept discreetly under a cap because I find them personally offensive to look at. Who do they think they are? So arrogant.

But by the 'its perfectly natural' logic people should all just piss and defecate anywhere and everywhere, who is anybody to get offended by a natural need after all

That would be illegal, and for good reason, because it would be unhygienic and spread disease. Breastfeeding in public (or anywhere else) is neither illegal, nor unhygienic. "It makes some poor wittle people get all upsetty-wetty in their wittle faces" is not a good reason to ban or condemn... well... anything at all.

Ban things that are hazardous to peoples' health, by all means. Other than that? If you start banning things just because "some people don't like it"... EVERYTHING will be banned.

You relate breast feeding a baby in public to pissing or defecating in public?
Do you think the mother should go into a public toilet to feed her baby?

Vicky. 08-03-2016 10:52 PM

Bit of an odd place to take a baby tbf. But those who get all uppity about boobs being used for what they are meant to be used for are stupid. Having said that those who breastfeed in stooopid places (such as on santas knee for a photo op) are stupid too.

Too many seem to do it in random places JUST to shock/get comments/attention.

Wishing to feed your baby is a ott request of people or something?

I do not understand the pee/poo argument at all either tbh

Unless you would also wish a bottle feeding mother to feed her baby in a toilet, or equate a baby drinking a bottle with someone having a gargantuan crap in the middle of a street?

Though as I said, those who would not look out of place without a neon sign flashing saying 'look at me, I have my breasts out', who seem to try their hardest to get attention..theres no need for those people either.

Yes absolutely, thank you DR for providing a sensible solution

MTVN 08-03-2016 10:57 PM

I admit I'm half joking but I really don't think its unreasonable for mothers to be discreet about something like that, it's not particularly hard to do so and though it doesn't bother me massively it''s also something that I don't think I need to be privy to
