Cultural appropriation

Spoiler:

'A video showing a black student accosting a white student over his dreadlocks has racked up more than two million views in two days. Shot at San Francisco University, it shows an unnamed black woman blocking the path of Corey Goldstein, who sports the controversial hairstyle. Referring to his dreads, she claims: “It’s my culture”

'does he have the right to style it in a way that has a deep cultural meaning to minority cultures? The ability to style your hair for fashion’s sake is a luxury, not a right. If it is offending others, Goldstein should consider giving up that luxury.'

What are your thoughts on this, is this an example of cultural appropriation?

I'm more upset by his choice of words "the coloured community". Do they still use this terminology in the US :umm2:

It's a hairstyle it doesn't belong to any culture, should white people accost black people that relax their hair  no!

MTVN 04-04-2016 09:03 AM

Baffling. Thankfully the UK does not get itself into such a mess over this 'cultural appropriation' thing as they do in the states.

jennyjuniper 04-04-2016 09:04 AM

It seems to me that the woman is just looking for a fight, but she's picked a stupid reason for that.

user104658 04-04-2016 09:20 AM

If white people can't have dreads then black people can't use straighteners / wear straight-hair weaves or wigs. Surely. Or does it only work one way.

Strewth, she would have had a heart attack if she saw everyone sporting an Afro in the 70s.
Get over yourself pet.

Wearing dreadlocks is not cultural appropriation.

Umm no, it is a right, we have the right to style our hair however we want, noone is 'allowing' us to have hairstyles!

That was honestly one of the stupidest articles I've ever read (as well as patronising to white people and black people). And when you have to start quoting Azealia Banks to try and back up your points you know you're struggling

EDIT: This is his response by the way...

Niamh. 04-04-2016 09:34 AM

Apparently Dreadlocks originated in India anyway so.........

Crimson Dynamo 04-04-2016 09:36 AM

Its FAKE

Even if it is fake though there are still people saying off the back of it that white people wearing dreadlocks is cultural appropriation so it's still a valid debate

Crimson Dynamo 04-04-2016 12:02 PM

Does that Justin Bieber now have them?

Except black people don't relax their hair to copy white people is to manage their hair. And white people use flat irons to straighten to hair so no relaxing is not to copy whites. And whites are not the only ones with straight hair. In fact when black women buy extensions they don't buy ''causcasian'' extensions it's more peruvian, brazilian, etc..

Black people aren't the only ones to have worn Dreadlocks though, Celts had them as did Vikings and apparently they originated in India. Getting annoyed with another race wearing a hairstyle you deem to be part of your culture is just pure stupidity imo. If white people claimed that black people weren't allowed wear their hair a certain way there would be up roar.
