The deceased perp

This is a tricky one as she was coming for the law enforcement officer and as he was backing away he was stopped by his vehicle and naturally feared for his life.

The lady should have obeyed the command and she knew the consequences

It's fair, she had a deadly weapon and he gave her plenty of warning.

If someone is running at you with an axe and refuses to stop then you're going to shoot

Crimson Dynamo 08-04-2016 11:34 AM

but what would have happened in the UK?

And another one and another one, and another black one bites the dust.

Seriously though you have a deadly weapon on you that you actually attempt to use then expect to pay the price.

Whilst I do believe that the hate for the US police force is totally OTT and most people don't realise what it's like to live in the US, I also believe that they shouldn't shoot to kill. They should be trained to shoot people in the legs or somewhere else non-fatal.

Very true.

I think the only way the guy in question is at fault is that he probably could have used a taser instead but I'm guessing what he did matches with procedure anyway.

The argument against that is that its easy to miss or it just does not stop them and then you are dead.

When faced with a life or death situation you shoot to kill first.

I agree with this.

In particular if you're in that situation where someone's swinging an Axe at you then you're just gonna be thinking about surviving rather than where to shoot the person.

even pepper spray sometimes will not stop a druggy

Yeah, I understand that too. Like if i was in danger, I'd honestly go as far as I could to defend myself. Esp if this was in my own home. But should officers be more prepared for this to happen, so that they think things through more? I dont know myself. But I certainly wouldnt want the dangerous and life threatening job they have. Esp with all the hate they get for it, no matter what they do.

Crimson Dynamo 08-04-2016 12:26 PM

i mean why has a wee wifie like that got a medieval axe anyway?

bots 08-04-2016 12:44 PM

Its about using force that is appropriate for the threat faced. Someone coming at you with an axe is intending to kill, so it is perfectly reasonable to defend yourself with deadly force.

Kazanne 08-04-2016 12:47 PM

He did the right thing and what most people would do.

Most likely scenario? She would have been overpowered and disarmed with the officer possibly sustaining defensive injuries to the hands and arms, depending on how skilled they are with their baton + luck.

If you're trying to tell me that there's a high possibility of a small-ish female without any sort of training killing a larger person, who has seen her coming, using a small axe.

Not an ideal situation, obviously, and in this case I can understand why the officer reacted and fired without time to think. However, I *still* think officers should be better trained in going for disabling shots and only shooting to kill when absolutely necessary. In this case there wan't even another firearm involved and (you would think) he could have taken her down non-fatally before she got close enough to be a real risk.

jennyjuniper 08-04-2016 03:21 PM

Best case scenerio would have been to shoot to injure. Having said that, if someone were coming at me with an axe I'd just point the gun and fire.

Hate it when people involve others in their suicide. If you want to die, by all means do it, but forcing someone else to be involved in your death is the ultimate in selfishness. It's like when people throw themselves infront of trucks on the motorway. No thought for the fact that it might traumatise the driver, OR that someone might swerve and end up killing multiple other people.

Apparently it's so common in the subways in Paris that most of the drivers are desensitised to it :umm2:
