Sonic booms
Just heard 2 massive sonic booms as RAF fighters from Coniston broke the sound barrier as an air France flight had lost communication en route to Newcastle I think... (according to FB)
The house shook :worry: Anyone else hear it? 'The bangs were reported to be heard from Pontefract to Wetherby and across Leeds this evening. Residents took to the streets after reports of windows shaking in their properties. North Yorkshire Police took to Twitter to confirm that the bangs were “sonic booms” from RAF Typhoon Jets. A tweet from the force said: “Confirmation from RAF that loud bangs heard across the county were sonic booms from RAF Typhoon jets. “No cause for concern.” North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Reports of explosion heard in Selby area. “After consulting with other emergency services this appears to have been caused by a sonic boom.” It has been suggested the sounds may have been caused by RAF Typhoon jets. Last month, two bangs heard around Northampton and Brackley were caused by Typhoon jets which had been scrambled from an RAF base in Lincolnshire to identify an unresponsive aircraft. An RAF spokesman said: “Quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft were launched today from RAF Coningsby to identify an unresponsive civilian aircraft. “Communications were re-established and the aircraft has been safely landed.” http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.u...#ixzz47XNc6b4D |

My sister just called me from Leeds and she said that the whole street came out because they thought a bomb had gone off.

Sonic booms are awesome. Did you know that the pilot doesn't hear it? Because the plane is travelling faster than the boom. Also it's not one boom, it's a constant sound that trails behind the plane after it breaks the sound barrier, so everyone hears it at different times wherever the plane goes. You'll hear it twice if the plane circles back around past you again. The science behind it is really interesting.
