The Runaway Trolley

The Runaway Trolley

A runaway trolley is heading down the tracks toward five workmen who will be killed if the trolley proceeds on its present course. Molly is on a footbridge over the tracks, in between the approaching trolley and the five workmen. Next to her on this footbridge is a stranger who happens to be very large.

If she does nothing the trolley will proceed, causing the deaths of the five workmen. The only way to save the lives of these workmen is to push this stranger off the bridge and onto the tracks below, where his large body will stop the trolley, causing his death.

Should Molly push the stranger onto the tracks in order to save the five workmen?

I guess from a utilitarian point of view she should yes. I would never be able to do it though.

No, its their time to die not the fat bloke

He is only going to die of diabetes a few years later so why not stop his suffering?

That would make her a murderer, and she would have to live with that, plus he could be a scientist on the verge of a breakthrough that will save millions of people, i'm a big believer in fate and if your times up then your times up, however if the workers on the track were people that i loved most in the world, then i'd help Molly push his big bum over that bridge!

I don't see how this is debatable... either become a murderer or let an unfortunate accident happen?

I wouldn't kill someone just to save others. In an actual scenario, she could just yell at the workmen, but I'm guessing that's not an option in this case.

All these stupid questions are just asking the same dilemma with a different method of death. :idc:

Just bloody jump Molly, your body will slow it down and your screams will alert them.

Now, now Josy, baiting is against the rules my lovely.

But on the topic of sh*te I do keep it in one thread instead of smearing it in several threads. :hee:

If it's worth going to prison for then Molly should go right ahead and murder the fat man, but I wouldn't suggest it.

Ashley. 13-05-2016 10:32 PM

But then again I assume watching five workmen die with the knowledge that you could have done something to save them is traumatising in itself so either way, she's set up for quite a stormy future.
