Muirfield Golf Club say NO to Women members after 2 year consultation

Muirfield has been told it will not stage another Open Championship as long as it continues to bar women golfers from becoming members.

The Scottish golf club announced on Thursday that its members had voted against allowing women to join.

Governing body the R&A said it would not stage the Open "at a venue that does not admit women as members".

To admit women golfers as members, Muirfield - a privately owned links in East Lothian run by The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers - needed two thirds (432) of its 648 eligible voters to back the move.

But after a "comprehensive" two-year consultation process described as "thorough" and conducted "with all due diligence and professionalism", it fell narrowly short of that number.

Of the 616 members who voted, 397 - or 64% - voted for the resolution, while 219 (36%) voted against it.

So its a privately owned club, it took a good look at the situation and voted NO in the end. Surely that should be applauded?

There's loads of womenly only clubs and institutions. Radical liberalism and radical feminism, biased hypocritical divisive sexist double standards

I think everyone should be able to join golf clubs. No women only or mens clubs.

Bunch of old fools, I do hope other championships will also boycott them.

List them.

There are plenty women only gyms. Swimming, the WI, either we want equality all round and there are no single sex organisations or we agree that some places can be single sex

That's the only appropriate description for them.

In many many golf courses women are associate members. Its a different type of membership that comes at a much cheaper price than full membership. While some may want full membership, many women would rather have the cheaper price. Can't have it both ways

£220 for one round and £290 for two rounds on the day.

You must have button's up the back of yer napper if you would pay that for a round of golf anyroad

I think a few women would brighten the places up.Some fresh flowerly perfume to freshen up those sweaty male club bars.

The fact that they think something like this even needs a 'consultation process' (never mind a two year one :umm2:) is embarrassing. The 64% who voted in favour of it should leave the club to be honest and make a stand. The club would then have no choice but to reverse the decision and drag themselves out the dark ages.

Crimson Dynamo 19-05-2016 05:46 PM

imagine if a gay person wanted to join?

:omgno:

They've banned women, not gay people :suspect: What point are you trying to make?

In that case we would have to allow men into women only clubs, there can't be varying versions of the rules to suit, they pay their money they can make their choice, their wives get to use the facilities as part of the membership, in some cases it may be the wife paying so technically they are the member :omgno:

I could tell you how most golfing men feel about lady golfers but I wont

I think 'women only' clubs should be scrapped too, I just don't see the point in them tbh. It's like with the WI, only women can join but men can still take part in the activities etc. It makes no sense to me at all. I think all of these organisations need to just move forward with the times and get rid of their 'men only'/'women only' rules. How is there any benefit to any club in not allowing members of a particular sex?

wood in fact but the feminazi bbc refuses to ever mention this

If they want to stick to their archaic rules, that's up to the dusty old dinosaurs who voted. But they shouldn't ever expect to host a tournament like the Open.

_Tom_ 19-05-2016 06:40 PM

Not sure I see a problem with a private club making their own rules. The fact that numerous women-only clubs exist and you never hear about them. Suppose that shows how hypocritical this fake outrage is.

Women only clubs exist... it's not a secret. It's not like someone's keeping quiet about them.
