Rate of bounce of the bouncing smilies

It occured to me that the :hello: smilie might be bouncing at a different rate to the :colour: smilie.

Is that the case ?

If not, suppose with these two side by side
:hello::colour:

If they commence to bounce as soon as this page is loaded, how long before they have a synchronised bounce. What would be the time interval between synchronised bounces ?

It reminds me of something we used to do in A Level Physics called Beat Frequency which occurs when you have two slightly dissimilar tones sounding close to each other. They interfere with one another and a separate wave form is created called the beat frequency. This would be observed as a sinosoidial increase and decrease in the volume of the two tones as they cancel and reinforce each other.

I wondered if it would be the case with :hello::colour:

In other words I need to get out more :laugh:

The little chap on the left seems to be struggling a bit.

:hello::bawling:

Or to put it more simply, Sticks:

When two sound waves of different frequency approach your ear, the alternating constructive and destructive interference causes the sound to be alternatively soft and loud - a phenomenon which is called "beating" or producing beats. The beat frequency is equal to the absolute value of the difference in frequency of the two waves. :laugh:

I'm well impressed:shocked:

Or, to put it yet another way, Steve, the little chap on the left seems to be struggling a bit. :laugh:

Come clean now, Sticks. :laugh:

The only reason you've posted up this thread is that you secretly enjoy using the :hello: :colour: smilies far more than the :mad: :bawling: ones, isn't it?

Go on, you can telll me. I can keep a secret - no-one else need ever know. :laugh:

WILDCHILD 15-04-2003 10:34 PM

I wonder if the dancing red blob :dance: dances at the same rate as the pink elephant :elephant:

Try comparing

Well it appears I am bored, so I thought I'd work out this problem lol

The jump heights of the smileys (in pixels) are:

:hello: = 3
:colour: = 8

So if my maths is right, they bounce on the same spot 1/24 times

The interval time between synchronised bounces - hmmmm, Ill get back to you on that one :wavey:

How desperate are we for something to talk about?!!!:laugh:

How many splats does this baby:

steve_o 17-04-2003 07:47 PM

Here's another one:laugh:do ROBS goldfish swimming around there bowl remember if they've done this a few million times before when they complete a lap.:thumbs: That's another post to the thousand.

I seem to remember that, like all animals, fish have their own particular memory span, in their case I think it is between 0 and 4 seconds. So if one times a lap round the bowl he may just forget if he has been here before.................

Glad others also understand the theory on complex harmonics.................:colour:
