Love Island beats Big Brother in the ratings for the first time

Quote:

Big Brother suffered an embarrassing ratings defeat last night, as it was beaten by rival ITV show Love Island for the first time ever.

Last night, 1.09million viewers (4.9%, including +1) tuned in to Big Brother at 9.00pm to watch the first part of the battle between the Housemates and the Others for nominations power.

However, at the exact same time, Love Island drew 1.13million viewers (5.1%, including +1) to ITV2 – marking the first time ever that it beat Big Brother.

The two shows famously engaged in a ratings war back in 2005-6, when Love Island had celebrity contestants and aired on the main ITV channel.

Last year it returned on multichannel ITV2, with mainly members of the public taking part – and while its first revival series failed to make much of an impact, viewing figures have roughly doubled for the current run, with most episodes hovering around the 1million mark.

Over the weekend Love Island enjoyed some extra publicity after contestant Zara Holland was stripped of her Miss Great Britain title for being involved in some particularly raunchy scenes.

While this is an embarrassing turn of events for Channel 5, Big Brother 2016 is considered to be performing well under the circumstances.

Despite competition from Love Island and the Euro 2016 tournament, the current series has so far averaged 1.17million viewers – up on the equivalent figure of 1.12million for last year’s ‘Timebomb’, which suffered a sharp drop in numbers.

Fair play to Love Island tbh - their promotional campaign was outstanding, their digital platforms are much better than Big Brother's and they're producing a much better show than last year.

Their promotion was similar to BB's, just ITV is a far bigger channel so more people viewed the ad :(

LI is enjoyable.

I guess it would be the other way round if BB was on ITV and LI on C5. I don't think it's a matter of quality in this case...

ITV2 is pretty much the same as C5 in terms of channel viewership and budget despite ITV2 being a digital channel - so the 'ITV is a bigger channel' thing isn't really an excuse given ITV2 isn't related much to ITV1 at all hence why a lot of ITV2's stuff get crap ratings compared to ITV1 - like they didn't promote LI at all on ITV1 by airing the ad during the BGT final or during an episode of Corrie or anything like that. Plus if that ITV thing is true then why didn't last year's series get good ratings and why did BB16 thrash it in the ratings?

It's like trying to justify MIC getting higher ratings than BB by saying well E4 is part of C4 - which is a bigger channel than C5 which probably helped it. Not really.

It's getting good ratings because they promoted it amazingly well on its channel (something which C5 don't do for BB) and it's been a better series than last year (which also deserved higher ratings than it got). Not to mention this series has been trending on Twitter and had everyone talking so that also helps too.

Plus this is only one episode - BB still gets considerably higher than LI anyway.

Like the first week of BB17 averaged 1.68m and the second week of LI (which aired the same time) averaged 1.28m.

I'm glad both are doing well and are up on last year :clap1:

They aired the ad loads of times in BGT final I'm sure.

Not surprised...although last night was the first night I went to watch BB first in the evening...before LI...

But that might have some to do with threats to be disowned for watching LI :hehe:

..I have to say that most of the people I know are watching Love Island atm...so they're all huddled in a corner chatting about that, while I'm a BB loner...

OK, I don't really know much about the "reputation" of each channel in the UK, so my bad. I thought that C5 is a really unpopular channel since it doesn't really have any flagship program you normally hear of, when "even" ITV2 and E4 have some.

Fantastic for them but they need to chill. It's the first time ever.

Plus the officials of BB are like 400k ahead of LI so...

Denver 20-06-2016 02:27 PM

LI is soo fake though they have scripts in front of them

This makes me laugh because I have high doubts half the cast can read... Never mind read a script for it to be believable :laugh2:

Jord 20-06-2016 02:46 PM

I definitely think Zara's decrowning helped the LI ratings last night as it was all over social media beforehand. Will be interesting to see if they are able to stay ahead of BB tonight.

It is an unpopular channel. And tbf C/BB is C5's flagship program - the same way it was for C4 when they had BB.

Me caring when the shares are good for both shows

It was advertised on ITV1 during BGT and I think Corrie as well, multiple times I remember them.

True... But LI gets more flack and it's nice to see stats that prove it's on par with BB

Well then there you go - that just proves how good LI's promotion was this year then. As well as promoting it well on their own channel (ITV2) they also went prime-time by airing it during Corrie and BGT. When will C5

hot2go 20-06-2016 05:06 PM

Let's hope none of em got a beach pass otherwise Philp Scofield will be have a hard on on this morning

Jake. 20-06-2016 05:07 PM
