A Progressive Alliance: an encouraging sign

Politics is in crisis and the repercussions from the result of the referendum are being felt socially, politically and economically. For many people, it feels like the country is being torn apart.

If we want a politics and economy that puts all of us first, it's time to come together and start building alliances. We need a democracy that listens and responds, that puts the people in control. We will not get there by shutting people out and perpetuating divisions, but by building bridges, alliances common cause.

In the current political chaos the Right are asserting themselves across the political terrain, while most of the Left's focus is on how Labour is pulling itself apart. Only a progressive alliance of all parties, people and movements can flip the debate to one that builds a society that is much more equal, sustainable and democratic. With a general election looming in the Autumn, a popular front of ideas and organisation is the only way to defend what we hold dear and to start to build a society that we can all live in and be proud of.

We are calling a series of public meetings to explore: what could a progressive alliance look like? How possible is it? And what can we do to start to make it feasible?

The first meeting will be on Tuesday July 5th, doors 6pm for a prompt 6.30pm start, finishing at 8.30pm. While this event is in London, local groups are exploring holding simultaneous events around the country. We are working on live streaming the event (details to follow) and will be hosting online discussion over the coming weeks and months.

This is again where I think your leave argument was fundamentally flawed DR. You have the absolute best of intentions and I know that, but your vision of Brexit includes things like this. People uniting, working together for the greater good, rising up to ensure that it won't just be the UK elite exploiting this decision to their advantage from now until forever.

But you give people too much credit. It simply will not happen. People will not unite, they will not rise up, they will not do anything at all now... We will all be under the very worst of the Tory bootheel for decades if not forever and most people who voted for it won't even realise why things are so bad for them.

I keep saying it, but I'm a "there is no glass ffs" realist. The people rising up to make themselves heard, trampel down a cruel government and force social justice for the worst off in society? It's a fairy tale :shrug:

I think you are being optimistic there.

The Conservative party is and was the most divided across the board as to this EU referendum.
With narrowly more of its MPs for remain and the rest leave.

If you really think that Theresa May being elected leader will bring on board all the MPs who wished to leave, you may be rather disappointed.

If it is a leader who supported leaving, then they will for sure I think, find it very hard indeed to win the hearts of MPs like Ken Clarke and others who think like him.
I think a lot of problems as to what happens here are going to come for the new leader.

I also don't think or believe all the Conservative MPs are in favour of this being seen through at all,and may decide to do all they can to thwart attempts to rush things at every opportunity.

With a bare 12 overall majority,the problems may now after this referendum intensify, especially if the manifesto is getting torn up mostly too in effect.
No manifesto elected on, no mandate, a free for all then..
