Isnt it like a play script? I dont think ive ever read one, apart from in school so i dont know if i'd enjoy it

Wizard. 30-07-2016 05:02 PM

Here for it :clap1: I'd love to go see the play but I'm broke and the fact that it's two parts doesn't help. I wish they'd record it and sell it on DVD

I'll buy it and we should act it out on here lol

Macie Lightfoot 31-07-2016 09:20 AM

Just stayed up to read it all even though I read the plot spoilers long ago, and even though this was pretty much a ****ty fan fiction come to life and I should hate it, I didn't? I don't know, it just feels so good to have a Harry Potter book in front of me that I don't even care that it was needlessly convoluted and just really bad

Pete. 31-07-2016 10:59 AM

Just gone out and bought it :clap1:

Even though the plot shall be a mess like Macie said the nostalgia and stuff makes it bearable

Tom4784 31-07-2016 01:15 PM

I read the first part, I really liked it. I'll be looking forward to the inevitable adaptation.

Tom4784 31-07-2016 03:51 PM

And I'm done.

I liked it a lot, the story was a little predictable and the fact that it's a play is limiting in terms of how big the scope of the story is. I'm really eager for the inevitable Film/TV adaptations though, if each part runs for about an hour and half on stage then I imagine the films may add more material to them to buff the running time to 2-2.5 hours which could help fill out the plot a little more and allow the story to breathe a bit.

Pros
- Albus and Scorpius are good lead characters.
- The opening scenes are great and I look forward to see them expanded upon when the adaptations happen.
- The parallels between Albus and Harry and their relationship is well handled.
- The character moments are excellent.
- Harry is far more compelling in this then he's ever been in the other books.

Cons
- The dialogue lacks that JK-ness about it. It's a little clumsy in parts.
- The story is a little too fast paced but it's understandable given that it's a play.
- The focus is squarely on a small number of characters and it's irksome that some characters get snubbed completely but then again it's a play so it's forgivable
-The overarching plot is a little messy and overly convenient. The script succeeds when it comes to smaller moments and relationships but the overall plot needs refining and expanding upon.

Got through it quite quickly.

I would definitely welcome an film/tv adaptation. It has the potential to work really well on film. I agree with Dezzy that the plot was convenient. It felt a little too fan fiction in some places.

I love Albus and Scorpius so much. I ship them.

Apparently

Spoiler:

The Delphi thing fits in with books since she was supposedly conceived during HBP which makes sense given that Bellatrix doesn't appear much in that book but it still could have been written better I think.

I did for a second think that they might turn Albus and Scorpius' relationship romantic at one point, especially as there wasn't really a main female character when it came to the younger characters

Macie Lightfoot 31-07-2016 06:32 PM

Spoiler:

the thing that doesn't make sense is that Voldemort being human enough to **** Bellatrix kinda contradicts everything we've been told about Voldemort in the seven books. like, the guy doesn't even qualify as a real human being yet he still has a working penis and sperm cells and made love to Bellatrix. WHAT?!?!?!

I think I can keep this part out of spoiler tags but my favorite minor character was without a doubt the Trolley Witch who randomly became a video game boss kind of obstacle with her spikey hands  so unbelievably absurd.

Spoiler:

I don't think it's that much of a contradiction tbh, it's just not a well developed plot point. I'm more concerned with the why than the how. Despite how monstrous he became he was still a man and I could see him looking at Bellatrix as nothing more than a plaything.

As for the why, I reckon he had a kid as a backup plan, he probably thought that if he lost his body again he could possess Delphi instead of jumpin through the hoops of getting his old body back.

Freddy Kruegar Trolley Witch <3

Macie Lightfoot 31-07-2016 07:15 PM

Spoiler:

For me, I can't wrap my mind around it because all the Dark Magic and soul-splitting and horcrux-creating supposedly left Voldemort's body in such a damaged state that he wasn't human enough to die, but he's somehow human enough to conceive a child with Bellatrix, another person who is literally insane and also damaged by Dark Magic. Not to mention the stuff about Voldemort not wanting or needing human companionship and not wanting to depend on anyone else and not being interested in anything over than his own power.

And like... I just generally have a hard time believing that of all the things Voldemort could have and should have been concerned with with the build up to the Battle of Hogwarts, he decided to conceive a child with Bellatrix. Why was Bellatrix never showing during the Malfoy Manor scenes in Deathly Hallows? Who was taking care of Delphi during the Battle of Hogwarts and everything else? None of it makes sense to me.

But even with all my complaints, I still really enjoyed it in all of its absurdity. I'm still cackling at the Trolley Witch throwing Pumpkin Pasty grenades with her hands-turned-spikes in futile attempts to keep kids on the Hogwarts Express :joker:

Pete. 31-07-2016 07:48 PM

Finished and loved it

Pete. 31-07-2016 07:53 PM

Spoiler:

Tbf I don't think they are going to explore Voldermorts sexual organs in too much detail for a franchise that has a sizeable child audience. But I get what you're saying Maci's.

I thought Voldermort's child was going to be a natural continuation of this story from the moment the Cursed Child, it's a shame that Delphi's character won't be explored in that much detail. I'm hoping that JK writes a short story about her life/origins. I care more about that then the Marauders' Hogwarts life story at this point

I imagine they'll explore her in more detail when they adapt it to the screen.

:fc:

They will miss a trick if they don't explore her childhood as stuff

Spoiler:

They'll have more time to play with when they adapt it so I'm certain they'll flesh out that plotline and make it so that it makes more sense.

I hope more of the old characters are mentioned in the adaptation and that we see more of Hogwarts.

Glenn. 31-07-2016 09:05 PM

Spoiler:

I assumed the conception of the 'love child' would have been magical because of how little there was of his humanity. That's all I can think of that makes sense because the thought of Bellatrix and Voldemort bumping uglies is horrifying :worry:

Macie Lightfoot 31-07-2016 10:42 PM

I found this online and chuckled.

Spoiler:

Draco: "oh look, I had a time turner the whole time and it's an even better version. How convenient!"

Ron: "hoho, I'm the comic relief, so I talk like I'm literally half retarded"

Scorpius: "I know the exact reactions of potion ingredients in my fourth ****ing year"

Hermione: "better not lock the door so that two students can't just get in with a simple spell, wouldn't want my office to be secure"

Harry: "divination from centaurs are so accurate, I'll just go nuts and continue to behave like vernon dursley."

Albus: "better tell everyone in the new timeline that they have the wrong job or wife, even after it's completely clear, that everything changed. Also, I better sound like a 4 year old when he learns santa isn't real

I'm so hoping they do this.

They've done it with stage musicals and sh*t in the past so they should do.

They'll probably wait until they've milked the stage show itself for as long as possible for a couple of years.

Mess ^

I guess a lot of that had to be done for the plot and story. I'm sure if JK had full control/passion into this it wouldn't be as messy

Marsh. 31-07-2016 10:48 PM

Is it worth waiting for the definitive edition?

How different will it be considering this is the rehearsal edition?

I doubt the story will change dramatically. I'm not sure what changes were made though

Tom4784 31-07-2016 11:14 PM

I reckon there'll be some changes, I think the dialogue will be tidied up a bit and I can see them adding one or two scenes to clarify some of the plot points.

Don't think we'll be getting a recording of the play any time soon though.
