He tweeted

Make your kids look up to the likes of Jason Kenny , Laura trott , not the likes of Geordie shore , TOWIE.

He's absolutely right :flutter:

Why would any parent have their child strive to be like someone from TOWIE or Geordie Shore?

What more do Olympians add to this world than reality stars do?

Braden 17-08-2016 11:14 AM

Well, I think it's more to do with the fact that Olympians are being awarded for having a genuine talent, whereas these reality stars are well-recieved on the basis of having no talent.

But are they talents? Like is running 100m which 95% of the world can do really deserve all the praise in the world just because it is quicker than some people.

Well the Olympics Games is a prestigious event that is an integral part of our culture. The training that goes into being the very best is very hard-work for certain people, regardless of whether it's 100M, Cycling or Marathon Swimming.

The people that Jake has mentioned have come out of the Olympics being the greatest at what they do in the whole world. That should definitely be rewarded. I get that 100M might not seem that much of a feat, but it's still a lot better to part of in terms of what it represents.

Smithy 17-08-2016 12:08 PM

Drag them by their roots Jake! Scalp them!

Liam- 17-08-2016 12:12 PM

I 100% agree.

If I ever have kids, I'd be a little heartbroken if they turned out to idolise the idiots on those types of shows, I'd much rather them look up to people who actually work hard to achieve their dreams, not people who feel entitled to respect and get famous because they shag and get drunk on tv, the likes of Geordie Shore and TOWIE are poisoning todays society, not only does it tell people that you can become rich and famous without putting much effort in, but it shows people that you can become those things by being obnoxious assholes, not only that, but I do feel like these types of shows have stunted normal relationships, they've shown relationships as being the kind where your partner isn't allowed to talk to anyone of the opposite (or same) gender and if they do, it's disrespectful or borderline cheating, the types of people my generation are now making famous, should not be famous, the majority of them anyway, there are obviously very rare gems, but in general, they're wastes of space.

If I had kids I would be proud of what ever they do as long as they're nice, honest people :)

what evidence does he have that any parent has encouraged their children to "look up" to Towie people?

But at the end of the day what olympians do is for their own pride and ego, it adds nothing to the well being of others or the advancement of our people. I'm not nocking them for it what they've achieved I could never dream of doing what they do and they're not bad role models but they're no better than any random chick on towie and I don't respect them anymore than I respect any other person I've never met.

non lol.

armand.kay 17-08-2016 03:41 PM

also what is he saying when he says "make your kids look up to?" because from what I've seen pushy parents don't equal well balanced adults.

Jordan. 17-08-2016 03:45 PM

OK but you can still like these shows without having to look up to the people on them? seems like he was just thirsty for likes.

Greg! 17-08-2016 03:46 PM

Hmm I'd rather get rich from being myself on a TV show than train for years to get a fake gold medal and be paid a pittance

Ofc you'd be proud of them, but I'd find it sad if they're the kinds of people that they looked up to, I don't think they're very apt role models for kids or even teenagers to have.

To have that opinion is fair enough, but I think in the context of this argument I would rather have a young person idolise an Olympian as oppose to someone from a Reality TV show. As I said, the hard-work that goes into these sports is admirable, whereas these Z-list celebrities are just keen to get their face on television.

The actions of these Z-listers are also what causes such outrage when younger children begin to idolise them. So many people think it's endearing to be a complete idiot because of people like Joey Essex. People think it's funny to watch Charlotte Crosby wet the bed, when in reality, if that were to happen to anyone in real-life there would shame attached to the action. I understand there's good and bad in Olympians and Reality TV stars alike, but if I were a parent I would want my child to achieve their success based on having talent.

Parents would be proud of watching their son/daughter even compete in the Olympic Games. The only reason the parents of certain reality stars are proud is because of the reaction from the audience who watch, but if the reaction was completely different I don't think the pride from these parents would still be apparent. Reality stars are just very lucky people.
